Adventures in Fountains Abbey - Filming location of The Witcher...

in #hive-194913last year

Seeing as myself and my GF have the same days off work this week, we decided to head out somewhere, initially we were unsure as to where to go until I suggested Fountains Abbey, in which my GF hadn't been before.

From where we live, it's only around a 60 minute drive, or just over, and thankfully the roads were clear, apart from one minor holdup on the way there, it was a pretty nice drive.

By the time we got there, it was pretty busy already and it was only around 11am, you'll be surprised just how many people I've photoshopped out of these images that I've posted, but the new remove tool in photoshop made this job even easier, I love it.

Fountains Abbey is run by the National Trust, and to be honest if you aren't a member it could be a pretty expensive trip, the good thing is free parking, however entry fee is £18.00 per adult or if you pay Gift Aid it will put it up to £19.80 per adult, although with gift aid, it usually allows your ticket to be open for 12 months.
Another good thing for Fountains is that both National Trust and English Heritage members get free entry, which is pretty good.

A woman walking down the main part of the abbey, even now in ruins, it is absolutely massive, the biggest one I've ever been to.

The above picture is my favourite room of any abbey I've visited (that's in ruins!) it's great to see a room of this size still intact from when the abbey was built way back in 1132.

The abbey has also been used in film and television, most notably The Witcher, which was partly filmed here, as well as The Secret Garden (old and new versions), the new version of All Creatures Great & Small, Anne Boleyn (2021) and Gunpowder from 2017.

Not only is there the abbey, but there is Fountains Hall and a Mill too, although the hall you can only go in 3 rooms, sadly.

After a quick look around the hall, we decided to head back to the abbey.

I took a few more shots, which have been shown previously in this post then we decided to head home, which we timed perfectly as Ripon where we had to drive through had a show or some sort of parade, as we drove through the council were closing roads off etc, we couldn't have timed it better.

Fountains Abbey is certainly worth a visit if you are in the area, I still can't get over the size of the place, there's also a deer park and gardens there which we didn't get the chance to go around this time.

All shot with a Sony A7iii and various lenses.

I hope you've enjoyed this blog and thanks for reading.

All the best :-)

You took some pretty breathtaking shots for this post! Really amazing quality with these. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you ever so much for the kind comments, the light wasn't how I wanted, but I'm so happy with how they turned out.

We can't always get ALL that we want. hahaha

Some great shots Daz. Really need to pay the place a visit.

Cheers Brian, just be aware of the extortionate entry fee if you aren't a national trust or English heritage member.

I'm going to the festival on the weekend. Last year it was at a nice castle. unfortunately, I don't know what awaits me in my new place. I hope there will be nice photos like yours.

Everything in this place is interesting, I didn't know that The Witcher had been recorded there, but everything is very beautiful, in terms of the cost of admission, it is a bit expensive, at least for me it is haha.

But it is worth paying this money to see all this in maximum splendor, thanks for sharing these beautiful photos here.
