One of the days we were in Maui we dedicated to visiting the famous little town of Lahaina. We heard that it was a really amazing place, like everything else on the island, so we decided to make the drive over and find out for ourselves.
We had been staying mostly in Kihei, aside from a few little trips around, and of course the Road to Hana, so we were eager to see another part of the island.
The town itself was really incredible, though I'm finding out now that I actually didn't end up taking many photos. I've heard that since the fires most of the classic old buildings are totally gone, which is super sad. I do have this one photo of us walking down the street which was the scene from one of the most infamous videos of that horrible fire.
That's my dad and mom walking down the main street facing the ocean in Lahaina, a week or so later this whole street was turned into a blazing inferno with people jumping over the banister on the left to try and escape the flames. The old style buildings, the cars, the trees, everything to the right of the photo was destroyed by the fires.
In the center of Lahaina there was, and maybe still is, this absolutely incredible tree growing.
I didn't have the lenses with me to truly capture this incredible thing, but every tree you see in the background of this photo is actually part of the same tree. It grows out from one huge central trunk, the limbs go out and eventually touch the ground where they start to root and form their own trunks. The total area that this ancient tree covered was absolutely immense, I was totally fascinated by it while we were there. The tree is in the center of this park, and it literally covers the ENTIRE park. It was an amazing sight. Most of the photos I took of Lahaina were of this tree.
My wife took this photo of me admiring the tree. You can see the scale of it here. EVERY tree you see in this photo is part of the same tree!!! It's totally incredible.
We spent the rest of the afternoon in Lahaina wandering around and checking out the town. I guess I wasn't feeling very inspired that day since I didn't get many photos. On the way home we passed by some incredible Hawaiian mountains and we just had to stop and get a few shots. That's my dad out with his trusty point and shoot capturing the moment. The camera is pretty small, but he's a huge guy and makes it look like the tiniest little toy camera ever 😂
After this we headed back to our place in Kihei and enjoyed another amazing sunset. The sunsets in Hawaii always seem to be totally incredible. Every single night it was like the most beautiful show just watching the sun go down. Lots of people go out to the beach and just sit and watch it.
Well that's it for our trip to Maui!! I hope you enjoyed following along with me and seeing all the gorgeous sights. I'd really love to go back to Hawaii again one day, but for now travelling around Europe is pretty cool. Feel free to follow me @dexter-k on Hive to see more posts like this! And as always thanks for reading this far :)
