It was a typical drizzly day as I ventured down to the Erewash Nature Reserve, located on the borders of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, UK. The area is maintained by the two county Wildlife Trusts.
There was an earthy smell of wet soil and grass, but even on a rainy day, the nature reserve is still worth the visit. The rain had made the colours stand out much more.
I passed the bridge affectionately called 'humpy bridge', which has been restored. Many years ago, it was originally built as a railway bridge to help with transportation during the coal mining and industrial period in the area.
It was surprising how many people were out walking as it was quite early in the morning.
There were a few bird feeders on the trail. I've never seen so many long tail tits in one place before. Unfortunately, I made a schoolgirl error and forgot to take my spectacles with me. I'd got no idea whether everything was in focus or not. At least I got something!
In the summer, the reserve is haven to bees and butterflies as well as an assortment of birds. At the pond and river, you will find frogs, toads, and newts. Today, it was just the swans who followed me up and down the canal.
I made my way through the wood. The nature reserve volunteers have worked hard to create well-maintained footpaths. However, they were a bit challenging at times as certain areas were a bit muddy, especially after the overnight rain.
Once I got to the pond, I decided to double back as it got far too waterlogged. Not good when your boots leak!
