Today I was given another chance to photograph snowflakes. At this point I consider myself the luckiest person from this point of view. I am really lucky.
Yesterday afternoon was quite sunny and the snow started to melt, causing the eves to drop a lot of water on the ledge. This morning was quite gloomy and at around 8 am it was snowing again. I was watching the event on my balcony, hoping to catch some nice snowflakes again, but the snow I got was not to my liking as there were no clear, nice snowflakes, just pieces of snow. Then the snowing stopped.
Than around 10 am it started again, with different snowflakes then I have shown you in my last snowflake post. I was quite surprised myself to see different snowflakes and I'm starting to realize what I saw on Wikipedia about snowflakes is indeed real.
This is one of the beautiful snowflakes I was able to capture. Compared to last time, today the snowflakes were more heavier, not so light and slim like last time. More icy if I can say that. I guess my next masters degree will be in snowflakes, if there's such thing (of course there isn't, it's just me being silly 😁).
I suppose due to the iciness these break more easily at landing and that is why I got some incomplete snowflakes today.
While I was trying to capture some cool snowflakes I got a weather forecast alert, saying freezing drizzle is coming.
Here's an example of different snowflakes. It's not what you see on drawings and illustrations but you can identify it on the Wikipedia classification.
If you look closely at the snowflake in the center of the photo, you can see that the center of the snowflake is thinner than the outside part. I suppose that's the skeleton that is forming first and due to the icy weather conditions dominating today, it got thicker but was not finished completely.
After taking these photos, I had to go to the grocery shop, that took me about 25 minutes or so. When I got home, all the snow on the ledge was melted already. Then about an hour after that it started the freezing drizzle again, after with the sun came out and the whole winter show was over.
In my last post I said these snowflakes are as volatile as crypto but I was wrong. Crypto goes up and down in price but these snowflakes come and go and when they go, they are gone forever.
After today's episode, I think I'm going to pay more attention to details and be ready to try to shoot some photos every time it's snowing. I'm not sure if I'll have another occasion this winter season as no one knows what's going to happen, not to mention you have to have a suitable surface to be able to capture them.
According to Wikipedia, you can get different shapes depending on the outside temperature. I'm a bit confused as snowing happens when the temperature is a little bit below 0°C or around that area, at -22°C or -40°C nothing is falling from the sky.
I'm very grateful each event happened on Sunday and I was home to be able to observe and take photos. These are the little things, gifts life gives us.
