Medieval Black & White Practice

Today I decided to post some random photos that I took over the past few month and have never posted them. I have successfully neglected my black and white photo practice, God knows when was my last black and white photo post.

I think this it's time for another black and white photo practice.

This photo was taken before I decided to take photography seriously and try to respect some basic rules as much as I can. So I needed to edit it, cur some out of it and get it into shape as much as I could. Should have done better at the scene but I didn't, so it is what it is.

This is a photo of the side of the entrance. There was this rope, what has a purpose and you'll see next what that is. I'm not sure if the rope adds to the photo or takes away from it, but it was there and I could not change that.

This is where the rope comes from. Don't ask me what this is called as have no idea, but I know what was used for. In medieval times, fortresses usually were surrounded by water for defense purposes. There was a drawbridge in front of the gate, crossing the water, that was lowered when they went out and lifted when there was danger of being attacked.

What you see on the photo is a replica of such device, that was rolled in order to lower or lift the bridge. Most likely those were bigger and stronger as this was just for demonstration, kind of symbolic.

This is the rope you saw earlier in the photos. I'd be curious to know if this size can really do the job or it's just for demonstration purposes.

This is the gear that helps coil the rope and the gate is being lifted as a result. I was curious to see when the gear was invented and was shocked about what I found out.

Early examples of gears date from the 4th century BC in China (Zhan Guo times – Late East Zhou dynasty), which have been preserved at the Luoyang Museum of Henan Province, China. The earliest preserved gears in Europe were found in the Antikythera mechanism, an example of a very early and intricate geared device, designed to calculate astronomical positions. Its time of construction is now estimated between 150 and 100 BC. Gears appear in works connected to Hero of Alexandria, in Roman Egypt circa AD 50, but can be traced back to the mechanics of the Alexandrian school in 3rd-century BC Ptolemaic Egypt, and were greatly developed by the Greek polymath Archimedes (287–212 BC). source

I'm not sure if it was the right choice, but I think these photos look better in black and white. It gives them an old look, or at least that's what I think.

I'm not sure if it was the right choice, but I think these photos look better in black and white. It gives them an antique look, or at least that's what I think.

Every time I read your post I enjoy walking and observing in detail all the samples of art that well on your way you go, scrutinizing and relating for my visual delight and thinking art culture at all costs and in all expressions.

I agree with you about the black and white photos of this type of gadget, the vintage, which gives us the feeling of something old and antique in the best retro style.

Beautiful sample colors are left to the imagination of those who observe.

Thank you @janitzearratia, indeed, colors are left to imagination, for those who want to see the colors.

💜🤗

Your pictures try to tell something. They have a story of their own. I feel the depth. I'm sure many people will agree with what I'm saying.

There's a story behind every photo and these definitely have one.

Thanks for stopping by.

Well yes, since every picture is worth a thousand words. What I meant was that I felt more depth in yours. 🙂

Every shot you do looks very meaningful, I always study in perfect shots but I can't do it yet

Thank you for the nice comment, but what you see depends on a lot of things, among which may be your screen as well. I'm trying to do my best.

I like the details and texture that is shown in black and white. It shows a lot but also leaves room for the imagination especially how do these look like in color :)

Details are the best when using black and white, that is why I love it.

wow, without a doubt, black and white images have their own personality, classics not only of graphics certify it, not only of photography but of cinematography such as the movie Schindler's List at whose time of filming, color technology already existed, they masterfully decided was in black and white set in that time of such a harrowing part of the history of mankind.

For odd reasons I don’t like black and white photos very much. Well, one of the reasons is it hides too much details in the photo.

You never know the Color of the object. What you think is blue might turn out to be green and you might be even amazed at the amount of details hidden.

They are not attractive too. It might be that fine not unattractive because am used to the pictures that has color. Who knows?🤔

Black and white has actually more details than you can think of. When you take away colors, details are the only one that remain and that is when you see them clearly. But obviously not everyone thinks like that and that is fine as we are not the same.

Oh 🤔, never really thought of it that way.

Black and white photos are really great at giving an old look. I don't think you are obsessed anymore since you don't post flower photos lol.

I am also surprised that the history of gears goes back so far. I thought they were invented more recently, maybe 10th century.

I don't think you are obsessed anymore since you don't post flower photos lol.

See? Told ya! 😂

Black and white photos have a lot to offer and the details are amazing. I'm going to focus on it more this time of the year as winter offers three colors.

The gear was a surprise for me too, but at least we have learnt something, right?

We learnt yes, I love black-white photos too. Maybe I can share something when I find something for to share. I love the aura of black and white photos

Looking forward to it :)

I really love 💕😘 black and white pictures but don't have the means to make them look nice like what we have shared here. Maybe I need to practice how it can appear nice. Do we have any edditor to improve such black and white pictures.

Great black and white 🤍🐻‍❄️ pictures of ropes and windows. My pleasure.

Thank you! However, if I can do it, you can do it as it's not rocket science. All you need is a camera and a photo editor. I'm still learning, these are practices to see what can I bring out of my photos.
