Resilient Emotions To Cope

Happy Solstice, Winter or Summer depending on Northern or Southern Hemisphere, change in seasonal gears again.

Last night and tonight we have had no evening sky now grand sunset being clouded over once again. Between 21st and 22nd December it is either the shortest or longest day of the year depending on which side of the equator you live, hope it's been a good day to remember.

No one needs to be told about our last two years of dramatic change, but how do we cope?

Perhaps an App or Pill could take away the inner turmoil, not yet, maybe in the future!

Reminiscing over year 2021 with all the up's and down's, times of being afraid, ready to run away, moments when you think 'stop the world I want to get off', yes I think we have all endured different types of mental strain, it's putting a lid on it and keeping the negative at bay.

Monthly Review here in South Africa

Steaming hot days peering down valley view during the day, late afternoon walks or early mornings when one captures moods of the day, these are the times I find rewarding, as always in the garden preferring not to venture out for fear of wearing a confounded mask.

0662_jan2021.jpg

January murky heat rising from the valley below, a river runs through here attracting bird life. During the hot days smaller birds are active in the trees well hidden from the scorching sunlight.

0695_jan2021.jpg

Late afternoons droves of small birds dash past ahead heading toward the river where large trees stand proud, I think many nest down there with all the movement in late afternoons, sadly the flight is fast one never able to capture small birds at that speed. Swallows circling above depending on conditions when a clear evening they fly higher collecting small midgets before they retire.

February we encountered some cooler days, out of the normal weather for this time of year and took opportunity to visit the beach..., where few roam with masks on.

0963_feb2021.jpg

Slightly hotter days the valley was steaming once more, here a heron perched on a light fitting surveying the valley from on high.

1010_feb2021.jpg

Month of March a park walk sharing the sports fields with local cattle grazing, a sight we are familiar with is cattle being herded across to the river on this side of town where they feed along the routes the herder takes them along.

1425_march2021.jpg

Wind blown clouds starting to show change in season once again, times outdoors is where I find solace looking at the clouds, bird life or anything I can find, change is ever present in the garden.

1568_march2021.jpg

April dazzled with stunning sunsets, beautiful clear blue skies with cooler weather approaching the Strelitzia reginae flowers in bloom enjoying an early showing, almost a reflection of the sunset later in orange sprayed across the sky.

1688_april2021.jpg

1641_april2021.jpg

Some ask how you keep your cool and cope? Life offers, nature gives...

Vervet monkeys go through the garden once or twice daily, always up to antics here is one giving me the look for interrupting play and eating, or is it the dog they stop to watch with such a cheeky face, yes they make us laugh, nice and naughty always up to tricks. Photo taken in May, however they are ever present daily!

1900_may2021.jpg

Yellow wild blooms pop up over the wall to greet while swaying in a gentle breeze in the month of May, these are the months we cherish as far as the weather is concerned.

2037_may2021.jpg

Blue skies, early cloud milling around this will disperse into a crisp clear June day, exercising the eyes from tip of horizon scanning around to see what may be going on in the valley.

2079_june2021.jpg

Brown hooded kingfishers sit on 'their' branch, daily greetings are done now is time to survey below for food, another regular to visit almost daily lifting ones spirits in sheer joy of a chat for awhile before going about their business.

2292_june2021.jpg

July - Much anticipated planned break to St Lucia in July, our President announced prohibition of alcohol once again, restrictions suddenly imposed a few days before departure.

Anxiously I phoned ahead to check with the holiday village whether family could all still arrive, requirements were in the form of clearance documentation being completed for each individual before arrival, medical information, identity numbers of all individuals which I scanned and emailed via PDF two days before departure, still uncertain as to what would be allowed.

Happy to be away from home for a week break! Tourism has taken a battering, the village was empty, no restaurants opened. With no liquor sales, curfews, we bought local fish from small store we had previously used to support, during these tough times.

2518_july2021.jpg

We did the estuary cruise, again only running small craft due to low numbers arriving with provincial travel ban. Moment out is where one finds the will to carry one, recharging your batteries by plugging into nature whether at home or away.

2435_july2021.jpg

Not only covid was evident in lack of people visiting, on entry to the iSimangaliso Wetlands Parks both Eastern and Western banks the vehicles were sprayed down for foot-and-mouth disease before entry.

2555_july2021.jpg

2630_july2021.jpg

Walking the dunes down to the estuary mouth where the sea should breach one day soon again, this area is in trouble as well!

2846_july2021.jpg

Trouble was brewing with our ex-president having to present himself at jail, travel home it was evident with burning of fields, burning cars on the highway massive presence of police on the three hour journey home, trouble was on the way.

Numb, our week away in no time slipped into a vacuum where a day later safely home riots took over, now all residents were seeking out any form of weapons to help the local groups set up barricades to protect our shops, homes and people.

Groups opened app channels to know where trouble was on the rise, another channel seeking out baby supplies, medicine, food, we began swapping items between homes to keep each other going. With day/night barricades set up, hot drinks and food need to be supplied to the men standing guard in the coldest nights of the year that followed.

The cold of night a reflection in hearts cold with fear, not knowing who would be next in the raiding. Rampaging people coming over the hills, yet we did take time to remember it is not all, many over the hills as afraid as we were.

Eventually people united in a stand against this madness, slowly.... very slowly the army with government backing started to make a late appearance when the ill equipped small local police force had tried the utmost to work with residents with what little they had to secure home towns.

The month of July 2021 will not be forgotten in a hurry, this extreme ugliness of human behaviour is imprinted in memory forever! Currently many people wish to leave this beautiful country of ours and I cannot blame them!

Sharing only beauty in nature of time away since what followed is not something one wishes to dwell on, definitely not tell and show photography revealing raw wounds of a time we still coming to terms with.

August the Snake lily flowers popped up to announce a possible early entry of Spring, clouds danced above the valley with patches of blue we have had more than usual rains through the winter months.

3384_aug2021.jpg

3399_aug2021.jpg

September the Southern Tree Agama (our Blou Koppie lizard) started to display brilliant colours for attracting a female. Life carries on and so must we, dig deep find beauty in all to move forward coping day to day.

3618_sept2021.jpg

Once again we were able to walk on the beach to take in sights, smells and sounds alleviating tension from continued restrictions, coping with short excursions to lighten the load of life.

3801_sept2021.jpg

October a peek out the other side of the garden using the top of the concrete wall to frame the daily iris in bloom on the bank with bamboo palm I planted years ago to stabilize the soil. Establishing a garden is much like life, it requires assistance to balance then enhance, binding together in preference to wash away land.

3943_oct2021.jpg

Over the valley after good rains green everywhere, ending days with stunning sunsets.

4365_nov2021.jpg

Tapestry of life in nature ever changing like the people below coping one way or another with emotions, many being taken by either old age, broken hearts or the confounded/unfounded covid.

4001_oct2021.jpg

November my trusted feathered friend still arriving daily, displaying a tasty delight most probably one of the many dragonflies buzzing around.

4442_treats.jpg

Late afternoon quiet sunsets between rains now arriving with lightning in heavier storms. Storms a frequent reminder of the fear invoked, resilience reflected in the turmoil during the year.

4365_nov2021.jpg

December always arrives in flurry of excitement, with July long gone and hope on the horizon many have resolutely resolved to enjoy this Christmas season and festivities irrespective of what man or beast throws at us.

4416_nov2021.jpg

The humidity now marches through the early and late afternoons in the valley below, you can watch it soldiering on here....

This was a wonderful post outlining the year! Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing your experience here with us. I especially appreciate the optimism in the midst of difficulties! Keep up the great work.

Thanks for kind words, has been a strange year feels like one is constantly swimming through murky waters, floundering around to find direction.

Have a wonderful festive season and thanks for visiting.

Beautiful pics! It has been a challenging year, but at least for me, it has made me appreciate even more the small details and the beauty of the nature around me, no matter how small. It is good to know that the hard days you lived through in July are now behind, although those episodes always mark society when they occur.

Merry Christmas to you! 🎄

One appreciates what we have when faced with such unusual events, every little thing counts and becomes a reason to get up every day.

A minority can make life exceptionally difficult, one has to look at both sides of the story. Making it through this year would have been a huge mental torment had I not found my passion in nature and sharing it regularly.

Great set of images, looks like you had some interesting adventures. Thanks for sharing really enjoy looking at them all!

Life is one big adventure, make the most of it even during these trying times.

Have a wonderful Christmas if you celebrate or just enjoy the Festive season 😌 we only live once.

Lovely pictures.🙂

Thanks for visiting, comment and wishing you a wonderful festive season.

Thank you 🙂

Lovely photos as usual, February's sunset skies was unique, thanks for capturing the beautiful moment.

The blue sunny skies, a delight!

The animals made me wish I reside in KZN 😃

Merry Christmas, its been a year, enjoy!

Very strange year in more ways than one.

Close proximity to you is Sondela up near Warmbaths (Bela-Bela, Limpopo) a great place for you to escape for a long weekend or a week.

Have a great day tomorrow, take care!

Your pictures depict the beauty that can be found in your area. Nature and all that it has to offer must provide you with a great way to forget for a while all that is so disturbing.
While reading your account of all of the madness that you endured in July, I wonder if the people in your area will ever be able to live together in peace.
The conditions you persevere seem to be mounting, with no fix in sight.
I'm not sure how you deal with it all.
From what you have shared with us in this post, it sounds like many folks are tired of living with these constant threats and are willing to leave such beauty behind in an effort to feel safe.

I pray that things change for the better and that the New Year can ferry in more stable conditions.

Beauty of the land (being biased) is amazing, it is land rich above and beneath the soil, if all worked properly together this country could be amazing.

Leadership is problematic, perhaps to simplify I would not bend a knee to any European Royalty, nor would I bend the knee for black lives matter, both are equal when it comes down lines of heritage creating havoc in their wake over time (reap what you sow).

I have never voted for leading party, before or after apartheid. We have the best constitution, but lack moral leaders. Only exception is Nelson Mandela who was a lawyer and had plenty time to delve into psyche understanding the knife edge all were living on.

Actually the July riots revealed one thing across all colours/cultures living in our region, people are tired of what has been happening, for the first time all stood together, saying 'no more'! We helped each other as neighbours, stood side by side protecting towns, fed each other, it was an eye opener.

Yes both my sons have decided to move once borders open. One sitting unemployed, with BBBEE rulings, massive unemployment in the country, other son suffered two nervous breakdowns over the last year. Time is now for them to go, for older generation will never be accepted due to age. Such is life, many families broken in all cultures having moved already.

Leadership can either divide or bring people together.
We have not had a leader that has been able to close this racial\social divide in some time. When I look at some of the characters we have put into power over the past several elections, I just scratch my head. Money is power in every corner of the world and it seems to be no different in the United States.
Although we are shielded from most of the unrest that is taking place in our homeland because of where we live, as a nation we are being torn apart.
It seems almost impossible for anyone to bring both parties to a middle ground.
The approval rating that our congress gets is very poor. Whatever happened to compromise, common sense, and doing what is good for the people.
Each party has its own agenda and very few of our leaders can think for themselves, knowing that if they stray to far from party lines, their political future will be put into jeopardy.
Nelson Mandela, I'm afraid that the world has seen the last of his kind, a man of principal and conviction no matter the personal cost.
To have been a part of standing together as a community must have given you some hope that things can change if united.
This is where it all starts, not at the top but at the grass roots level.

We wish you a great holiday season filled with compassion and understanding.

Political arena I do not believe anywhere has what majority are looking for, great unrest in many due to massive divide in one way or another.

The few one would like to see in leadership do not wish to take on the challenge with all the rot set in.

We said goodbye to another good man Archbishop Desmond Tutu yesterday, he said the country is on the wrong path. Sadly level thinkers are slowly reaching the end of the road, now to find young....

Standing together people realized we can extend hand of friendship, politicians will try their damnedest to undo what was a natural standing.

Wishing You and Yours a wonderful New Year, hope Christmas was spent with great enjoyment in the company of family.

Wonderful photos Joan @joanstewart. The peace and beauty of nature certainly helps calm the senses and cope when trouble with people and government arises.

Love seeing the hooded kingfishers and the monkeys. Thanks for sharing your year.

When one thinks this life could be no stranger, weird happens again.

Being outdoors always grounds me to view the world and think things through to manage one day at a time.

What a year. We all have suffered from the same virus and lockdowns, but you also had power cuts, riots and more. Looking back it seems we here are living in another world, but thanks to your posts and the posts of others I got always reminded that it's not everywhere as peaceful as here.

And still you have had great vacations and beautiful beach walks, tried to enjoy life as it is now and provided us with amazing sunsets and lovely wildlife 😍

Year was filled with turmoil, finding oneself and holding onto sanity! People may not quite realize just how much a trip around the garden, down to the beach or park help afford places to assess life.

Thanks for always taking an interest in what happens here in South Africa, a year of sharing always helps alleviate pressure of the here and now, seeing life from different angles, not only the one we life in.

Now you do know the world is crazy when I only read yesterday of the August fires that swept through British Columbia. Media is focused on presenting one thing, forgetting events others may have an interest in.

!LUV
!BEER

The masses want these news and the media earn a lot of money. It's the same everywhere. Maybe people want to see the bad news from somewhere else because they distract from their own problems.

All cloak and dagger stuff, they blow things out of all proportion, all use same terminology next day quiet as a church mouse never to be heard of again... Reached a point in life that bad news travels faster than good news, you will hear about it sooner than later.
