And sure enough, I found another interesting postcard last weekend.
This time it concerns the "Waterpoort" (Porta Regia), an old gateway to Antwerp that was established as a gate of honor for King Philip IV of Spain in 1624. (yes, in Antwerp we have been conquered by just about the whole world throughout history 😁)
The funny thing about this gate is that it was moved 2x over time. When work had to be carried out on the quays in 1880, the gate was moved for the first time. The postcard is a photo after that first move... of the original place of course no photo exists, the cameras in 1624 were not so reliable 😉
In 1933 she was moved again because a tunnel was going to be built under the Scheldt at the place where it stood... The color photo is therefore the place where the gate currently stands. At least, last weekend anyway, didn't check this morning 😉
Because of the many movements, the people of Antwerp sometimes call the gate the "Wandelende Poort", the walking gate.
Below also my attempt to adjust the style of the photo to the postcard... not so good this time 😒
