i took the june photo with all the boats on the eve of St. Hans, the saint who christianized norway. it has always been a celebration of midsummer's night. though the equinox is on the 21st or 22nd we celebrate it on the 23rd. in the times before christianity it was celebrated on the equinox but much like christmas being celebrated on the 25th, the name of the holiday was changed and the date moved slightly rather than done away with. all along the coast the night is celebrated by the sea, whether in a boat or on the shore gathered around a bonfire. unfortunately the event is often hampered by rain so the years we are lucky enough to get a warm calm night norwegians are sure to make the most of it.
