A Quick visit to the Rural Cemetery here in New Bedford

Someone who follows me on facebook mentioned a Cool headstone on one of the graves in the Rural Cemetery here in New Bedford, so after I had been out for an early morning walk and before heading tot he Supermarket, I had a few minutes to spare before the supermarket opened I decided to swing by the Cemetery and see if I could find the one she mentioned.

And here it is and what a stylish headstone.

I was curious who was buried there and here is what I found

Edward Zettick lived in New Bedford during the Civil War. He was a well-known tailor, a two-time whale voyager, and former Navy man within the New Bedford community. His grave is a testimonial to that wealth; it is a full-size cement version of his 1900's self.

the Statue is pretty impressive with such cool and intricate detail even after all these years

This cemetery was opened in 1837 and comprises approximately one hundred acres of burial grounds.

In this cemetery, we also have a section where Civil War Veterans are interred. Also, two World War #2 Veterans’ Plots and one for the deceased veterans of the Korean Conflict/Vietnam Conflict.

Here is a wider out photo of the Statue/headstone

The day I visited there was just before memorial day and seeing all the flags in this portion of the cemetery very touching

Beautiful photos of such a beautiful place!
So stylish!
I wonder if the status has been there for many years already...
It seems like it.
It's still so detailed though. Very impressive!

Thanks
I believe he died in the 1950's so its probably around 60+ years old

It really looks well maintained for a 60+ years old statue! Nice nice

Isn’t it just that amazed me

We tend to have some pretty intense cemeteries around here. It’s a theme in some ways to how much old money is up here! Lots of mausoleums and extravagant stuff. I haven’t seen many statues like that though, that’s pretty cool.

It would be cool to find the civil war graves and clean away the junk on them to restore them a bit for people to see and appreciate.

Yes I think your spot on a cemetery with lots of Mausoleums shows an area with a lot of money I guess
I like your idea of cleaning up areas of civil war graves

Hi @tatoodjay
Your post reminds me of an adage "dead elephants leave their tusks, dead people leave their minds".

Everyone who dies will leave his services. But not all dead will be remembered by others, only big people. I mean, only people who really do a lot of good for people.

But, even so, anyone will also be remembered, at least for those who have loved him.

Thanks for your visit and so true what you say

Hello dear friend @tattoodjay good morning
It is a beautiful tombstone with a great story behind it, I like how well cared for the cemetery is.
Excellent shots. I appreciate you letting us know
enjoy the weekend

Thanks and you to have a good weekend

Very interesting grave marker. The full size portrait. Sometimes you see pictures or portraits now. Also, nice shot with the US flags.

Thanks for the visit, yes this life size statue really grabs ones attention

what an amazing photos

Thank you 🙏

I really love the detail of his clothing, a very ornate outfit, befitting of making a statement even when he is gone. I still love walking through the cemeteries, looking at the mausoleums and statues, true pieces of art. The bigger, more beautiful ones - there is no guess as to how much they were loved.

New Bedford is in the heart of our country's beginnings and growth. I should know or at least have looked it up. Do you know how many cemeteries are there? I cannot guess but, I know they had a few and each one is special in its own way. I like the picture up close of your subject. I can see exactly how they wanted him portrayed. A tailor showing off his skills.

As an aside, I forgot, but Rural is really the name of the cemetery, not one that is in a remote part of the town. :) I love this post!

We have talked about how death and cemeteries were more revered in the past than they are now. Most people are not even buried, but cremated. I wonder if ten generations from now people will wonder what happened to us all, if we really passed, or did an asteroid really take us out?

Have an amazing day!

I was curious when you mentioned how many here

https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery-browse/USA/Massachusetts/Bristol-County/New-Bedford?id=city_59081

23 Cemeteries I have noticed maybe 7 of them

The detail in this statue is amazing considering it’s between 80 and 100 years old

Does makes us wonder what it will be like ten or even two generations from now

That is indeed an impressive headstone @tattoodjay
Such a details sizzled in there. Beautiful. The woman is stunning too, I like her posture.
Thanks for sharing it with us today.
Have a wonderful Saturday 👋🏻😁☀️

I was amazed by that statue the detail still so clear

Had a nice sunrise walk so a great start to the day

Yes… well preserved after that time. Stunning, must have been good material and a good artist creating it. As it must have been weathered, but it is still there.

That is nice to hear, yay. A great start of the day. Enjoy it further 👋🏻😁

I hope your weekend is going well

Yes, so far it is going well @tattoodjay 😁 thanks!
