A sight of these beautifully colored busy birds always brings a smile on my lips.
I never miss an opportunity to watch a woodpecker. They all have color, style and a strong head. Literally - they have a strong head because they use their beak and head to hammer holes in trees!
The brilliant colors, especially the golden yellows and stark reds they carry so flamboyantly makes me chase after them to capture them on camera...
It is NOT easy to capture these beauties on camera. They are extremely active and keep hopping around even when they are on one tree. Their head constantly moves and if they are after a worm, it takes extremely high shutter speeds to freeze the motion and get a good frame.
Here are the settings I used typically for capturing woodpecker:
- Aperture: 5.6 Widest possible on my lens to capture light since woodpeckers are always in trees
- Shutter: 1/1000 to 1/2000 To get a good freeze of this constantly moving bird
- ISO: 640 to 2000 depending on light conditions
- Support: Handheld It is almost impossible to follow and track the quick moving bird using a tripod

I have spent days and days in the jungle, watching these amazing birds and capturing these shots. I think they are wonderful creations of nature.
