Brothers in Arms is the fifth studio album by British rock band Dire Straits, released internationally through Vertigo Records on May 13, 1985, and in the United States through Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by Neil Dorfsman and Mark Knopfler. Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, Pick Withers, and John Illsley. Additionally, the album is credited with being the first album in recorded history to sell more than one million copies in CD format.
Brothers in Arms spent a total of 14 non-consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, as well as 34 weeks at number one on the Australian Albums Chart and nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States. It is also the first album to be certified ten times platinum in the UK and the eighth best-selling album in UK chart history. It has been certified nine-times platinum in the United States and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling albums in the world. Brothers in Arms was the 8th best-selling album of the 1980s and is currently the 24th best-selling album worldwide.
The album Brothers in Arms won Grammy Awards in 1986 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. Additionally, the 20th Anniversary reissue won another Grammy for Best Surround Sound Album in 2006. In 2000, Q magazine ranked Brothers in Arms at number 51 on its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. The album was ranked number 351 on Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list in 2003, number 352 in the 2012 revised list, and number 418 in the 2020 revision. The album was also featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
Additionally, as of July 2016, Brothers in Arms is the eighth best-selling album of all time in the UK. It is also the third best-selling album of all time in Australia and the 18th best-selling album of all time in France. In the Netherlands, the album held the record for the longest-ever run on the Dutch Albums chart with 269 weeks (non-consecutive), but lost it to Adele's 21 in 2016. The album is currently the 24th best-selling album worldwide as it has sold over 30 million copies. There are great songs on the Brothers in Arms Album such as Brothers In Arms, So Far Away, Money For Nothing, but my favorite song on the album is Walk of Life. The chipper and upbeat feel took of Walk of Life gives me a feeling of positive energy. It's mind blowing that a song can go with you as you grow and go through different stages, it's truly a great work.
