Metallica is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. The album is also known as The Black Album. The album was released on August 12, 1991 by Elektra Records and was produced by James Hetfield, Bob Rock and Lars Ulrich. Recording sessions took place at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles over a period of eight months. Additionally, during Metallica's recordings, the band's songs were written mainly by frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, all lyrics are written by James Hetfield.
Metallica promoted the album with a series of tours, while the album marked a change in the band's music from the thrash metal style of the previous four albums towards a slower, heavier and more refined sound.
Metallica received critical acclaim and was a major commercial success, and the album became the band's best-selling album. The album debuted at number one in at least ten countries and also spent at the top of the Billboard 200 for four consecutive weeks, becoming Metallica's first album to top the album charts.
The Metallica has sold more than 31 million copies worldwide and is one of the best-selling albums worldwide and is also one of the best-selling albums in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan data. Currently, the Metallica album is the 18th best-selling album worldwide.
The Metallica album was certified 16× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2012 and has sold over sixteen million copies in the United States, becoming the first album in the SoundScan era to achieve this. Metallica played Metallica in its entirety during the 2012 European Black Album Tour. Additionally, the Album was ranked #235 on Rolling Stone's The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list in 2020. Additionally, in December 2019, Metallica became the fourth release in American history to enter the 550-week milestone on the Billboard 200. It also became the second longest-charting traditional title in history, only behind Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), and the second to spend 550 weeks in the album charts.

The Metallica album is essentially musical in its details and dynamics, concept, parts and parcel of arrangements, song structures and impact of individual parts. The songs I listen to most from this album are "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters". I think they are both great works.

It may sound pretentious, but it is one of the most emotional and meaningful songs ever. It's a masterpiece and one of those songs that will never get old.
