The Wall is the eleventh studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd, released on November 30, 1979 by Harvest/EMI and Columbia/CBS Records. The album was produced by Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour, James Guthrie and Roger Waters. This album is a rock opera that explores Pink Floyd, a jaded rock star whose eventual self imposed isolation from society forms a figurative wall.
The album was a huge commercial success, topping the US charts for 15 weeks and reaching number 3 in the UK. The album initially received mixed reviews from critics, many of whom finding it overblown and pretentious, but it was later praised as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Bassist Roger Waters conceived The Wall during Pink Floyd's In the Flesh tour in 1977, modeling the character of Pink after himself and Pink Floyd's former songwriter Syd Barrett. Recordings ran from December 1978 to November 1979. The Wall album was the last album to feature Pink Floyd as a quartet.
From 1980 to 1981, Pink Floyd performed the entire album in a tour that featured elaborate theatrical effects. Also in 1982, The Wall was adapted into a feature film, written the screenplay by Roger Waters.
The Wall is one of the best-known concept albums. The album The Wall has sold over 30 million copies and is the second best-selling album in the band's catalogue, the best-selling double album of all time, and one of the best-selling albums of all time. Additionally, Pink Floyd's album The Dark Side of the Moon, released in 1973, has sold more than 45 million copies and is the 4th best-selling album. The Wall is the 27th best-selling album worldwide, with sales of more than 30 million copies.
In 2000, The Wall was voted 30th on Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums. It was included in Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2003, 2012 and 2020. From 2010 to 2013, Waters staged a new Wall live tour that became one of the highest-grossing tours by a solo musician. The album topped the Billboard charts for 15 weeks, selling more than one million copies in the first two months, and was certified 23x platinum in 1999. Additionally, the album remains one of the best-selling albums of all time in the US. Engineer James Guthrie's efforts were rewarded with a Grammy award for Best Engineered Recording (non-classical) in 1980, and the album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Rolling Stone ranked it #87 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003. The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
Additionally, a film adaptation titled Pink Floyd – The Wall was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in July 1982. It was written by Roger Waters and directed by Alan Parker, with Bob Geldof as Pink. Also, a modified soundtrack was created for some of the film's songs. Click to see the ranking of the best-selling albums of all time and to get more information about the albums.

There are great songs on the The Wall Album such as Goodbye Blue Sky, Nobody Home, The Show Must Go On, but my favorite song on the album is Comfortably Numb. If there was a list of great guitar solos, Comfortably Numb would probably be at the top of the list. I think it's the best track on the album, and one of the greatest works of all time. Massive guitar sounds give me chills every time I listen to this song. A beautiful masterpiece.
Pink Floyd - Comfortably numb
Additionally, "Comfortably Numb" was also the last song performed during the band's Live 8 reunion set, and was the last song the classic line-up performed together due to Richard Wright's death in 2008.
