Much information about his early life is unknown, his dates of birth vary between 1944 and 1948. One thing was clear. Sylvester was a child evangelist known as the "Gospel Wonder Boy." Sylvester's life takes a radical turn when constant family conflicts force him to run away from home at age 16 and end up on the streets of Los Angeles for several years, but his life begins when he moves to San Francisco in 1967.

Sylvester joined a short-lived performance group called The Cockettes, a group of psychedelic drag queens founded by Hibiscus (real name George Harris). That same year, Sylvester performed at the San Francisco Temple with the then-unknown Pointer Sisters. Sylvester appears in the scandalous film Trisha's Wedding, which satirizes the wedding of President Nixon's daughter, Trisha.

Sylvester signed a solo deal with Fantasy Records in 1977 and worked with legendary Motown talent producer Harvey Fuqua, who produced his 1979 album, Stars. Shortly afterward he met Patrick Cowley, who became a frequent collaborator. The synths and Sylvester's vocals proved to be a magical combination, pushing Sylvester's sound in an increasingly danceable direction.

Step II (1978) produced two disco classics: You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) and Dance (Disco Heat). Both songs reached the US charts, reaching number 1 for six weeks in August and September 1978.

Sylvester died in bed from complications of AIDS on December 16, 1988, at the age of 41. He planned his own funeral, dressed in a red kim# ono and insisted that the coffin be left open for his followers to see. In his will, he donated his music royalties to two HIV/AIDS charities: Project Open Hand and the AIDS Emergency Fund.
