The problem is that Usher's Confessions was conceived as a pure R&B album with an emotional, even melancholic, conceptual arc.
The material was reportedly inspired by the singer's complicated relationship with Rozonda "Chili" Thomas, a member of the hip-hop group TLC, which ultimately ended in divorce. Reportedly, even Usher wanted the first single from the album to be 'Burn', a song about how relationships turn sour. It was the artist's favorite song that they wanted to release as the album's lead single... but it didn't make it that far. Usher gave several songs from Confessions to record executives, but the album was reportedly left unfinished. The argument is that the song is good, but the hymn is not enough. On the radio you hear something reminiscent of a club/disco. So they turned to Lil Jon, one of the most popular producers and celebrities in the hip-hop/rap scene.
Born at the time in Atlanta, Lil Jon was recognized for his cool image, his brilliant charisma and, above all, as a pioneer of the burgeoning aggressive rap subgenre called crank. In 2000, Pop Industry wrote:
John (real name Jonathan Smith) took this style to the upper level of the main stage and "Yes!" Usher, the point where the nutcase became popular. It is important to note that before going international, Lil Jon worked as an executive and producer at So So Def Records, another big name in the rap world of the time, founded by Jermaine Dupri in Atlanta in the 90s.
Lil Jon tried to dump it all on Petit Pablo and Jive Records, but as Stereogum reports, the label pressed the single on vinyl. Realizing that canceling the release would result in a huge financial loss, they were unable to recover the song. So Jon set out to write another new beat for Usher's "Yeah." In this way, along with the synthesizers came the instruments that we all know, which despite the minimalist nature of the composition were catchy and achieved their goal (also with the help of Ludacris in the most rapped parts of the song).
