Silver spoon

Since childhood I was taught to eat with my bare hands, never knowing what a silver spoon was.

The ups and downs tamed me into who I am today, from childhood to my teens to me right now.

Childhood

Being born in Tamale Teaching Hospital and nurtured in Savelugu made me understand that the world needs to be perceived through multiple lenses.

The was no electricity where I spent the early times of my childhood and I remember the times we had to sleep in the compound of our house because the room was just too warm to sleep in.

There were times we had to set fire in our rooms so we could sleep soundly because the place was just too cold.

Schooling was tough here at that time as everyone never saw the importance of it, we had to eat before going to school and come back home when it was break time so we could eat leftover food before returning to school.

It was funny no matter how you look at it, all we knew was to make noise and sleep in school, we practically weren’t taught anything there but we kept on going.

I remember there was a time when a new teacher had come taken over our class and bought slates for all of us so she could teach us writing.

She did teach us quite a lot (My handwriting is a still mess though 😂). Life in Savelugu was okay just that technology had gotten there a little late 😪.

My mother then took me to the capital town of Ghana(Accra) for us to stay there, she was a trader who sold Ponmo in Madina market.

We got there and stayed at our family house over there where they dealt in trading livestock for a living. That place is where I had a lot of memories and met my best friend too.

The school I went to there was a good one, as the time I went there I couldn’t even spell my name. An aunt taught me how my name was spelled and I kept it at the back of my mind to date.

In school, I was kept in primary school 1, where I practically started school from scratch because my foundations were very poor.

My mom later gave me to my uncle to raise me, this place is where I learned how to cook rice and many kinds of it, so started to wash my clothes and iron them.

My uncle’s wife then sat me down and taught me how to read from scratch, from the English alphabet to basic mathematics. This went on for a long while.

She didn’t only teach me how to how identify and to write the alphabet, she taught me to memorize and write them off the head, I remember when she bought a picture book where I had to memorize the pictures and their spellings so I spell them off the head.

I spent a few years there and I must say that all credit for my educational journey goes to the women who pushed me past my limits and broadened my horizon.

I finally left Accra for Tamale to continue my life there this happened in 2009. I wasn’t quite happy about it as I was tricked into going back to a tamale.

Teens

My teens happened in Tamale, I was young then very young at that time. I was sent to a government school to start all over again but the school authorities said I was intelligent enough to be in Primary 6 yet my dad said no and made them admit me to primary 3.

Life went on like a dream as everything happened overnight, the friends I had made, the struggles we had been through, the beating we had received from the school.

It was time for us to be admitted to Junior High School, we were happy and went there for the next target which was Senior High School.

At that time, my parents had gone back to Savelugu leaving me alone in Tamale, I had to cook, wash, and send myself to the hospital whenever I got sick and had to take good care of myself. This was when life got real with me, I knew I was alone and school was the way out for me so I took my studies seriously.

Fast forward, we were in Junior High School 3 and I was the assistant School Prefect, I was well known for my intelligence and demeanor. I was called The Wizard of Science by my mates which spread to the whole school.

We wrote our BECE exam and I passed and was placed in Ghana Senior High School and was given General Science as my program of study.

I’m Ghanasaco, it wasn’t easy, with Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Elective Mathematics, it was tough being a science student as we had to learn more than other people because we knew what was at stake.

It was there I made some good friends till now, we always took it a point to have fun whenever we had the chance, and also caused a bit of trouble from time to time 😏

I took a liking to Handball 🤾‍♀️ and took playing it seriously, I was later the Assistant handball captain of the school. All that while in school, there were days I had nothing, not even a dime to buy a sachet of water talk less of food.

There were days I looked up to the heavens for any miracle that could come my way, life wasn’t easy, not at all, not like how Senior high schools were portrayed in the movies. I had to understand that I keep my head straight and not back down.

All the struggles I endured were never wasted as when we wrote our WASSSE I had passed and looked forward to tertiary education.

The Present

I applied to study computer science at the University for Development Studies(UDS) I was given a Diploma in Computer Science which I took wholeheartedly and went on to pursue my career in computers.

The campus is at Navrongo in Ghana, a place where I can swear the sun is located 10 km from it 😪😂 and prices of goods are hitting the heavens.

Studying on Navrongo is not fun at all, all day learning and never playing a bit. It’s all about lectures and seriousness.

With the hard work I kept in, I graduated and when for a top-up for my bachelor's in Computer Science.

I’m currently a level 400 BSc in Computer Science and also the Computer Science Society President of the Computer Science department.

Mine

The struggles continue, there were days I and @depressedfuckup had to sleep with empty stomachs in our room on campus. Days where we had enough to stuff our kitchen with foodstuff, days where we had to drink tea more than six times a day just because there was nothing to eat.

But everything that has happened to me in my life gives me the resolve and motivation to push forward till no wall blocks my stance.

I was never born with a silver spoon, I was taught to eat with my bare hands.

Silver shines, but it’s just another metal

Wow! This is a really inspiring story I’m glad you shared with us. Hopefully life is better now and will continue getting better as we take steps closer to our dreams everyday

It gets better with time

All shall be well, let the wings of time lead us to to the better future

As Erika has said, the life you’ve lived has been very important and valuable to teach you a lot of real world lessons that many people in society today don’t experience and don’t understand. I think it’s very important to have undergone these things because they help us appreciate and shape ourselves for the future. You know what it’s like to be hungry and have nothing while people who have everything, when left to their own devices, can’t handle it and end up in a worse scenario and often die because of it.

The important part about it all is to try and do the best we can to raise our children one day. If we can manage to work hard and also be successful but not have spoiled asshole children that don’t appreciate the worth of money, then I think we are far more important and successful in life than most of the rich people because we don’t let the situation get to our heads and ruin us.

One of the best experiences I’ve had is the fact that my dad lived and made me watch his steps so I could better mine.

It’s those who have been through a lot that know how to teach a simple life to their descendants

Well, hats off! Your journey was difficult, but maybe that's why you are who you are today. You were left alone to figure out life and your only choice was to succeed. Trust me, this is far more valuable than any fancy private school or any wealth in the world.

maybe that's why you are who you are today.

There is no doubt that has impacted my life to the fullest, looking back at my educational journey I thank God my uncle's wife had spent her time and effort on me, even though at that time I thought it was torture... Little did I know...

You were left alone to figure out life and your only choice was to succeed.

Honestly, It's now I'm grateful to my parents for making me understand that life wasn't child's play and a lot had to be done if you wished for a comfortable life.

Trust me, this is far more valuable than any fancy private school or any wealth in the world.

When I realized that reality wasn't about going to a private or fancy school, but putting in maximum effort. I realized that talent was good to have and that hard work is very important.

The struggle was real and it isn't all glamorous, I am glad you pushed above all and came out strong. You are incredible and your parents, friends, and families should be honored they have a star like you among them.

Thank you for the kind words
