Diction matters....
I've talked about how I got back into tutoring lately and the last topic we've discussed was how to choose a proper diction. Words carry power and it is very important for people to think through before they speak.
Welcome to my brain dump, it's morning and when I can sit down, sipping a cup of coffee while contemplating life and emptying it out a little.
Somehow, recently many politicians in the country are scrutinized over their diction. The latest case was involving the president spokeperson who said "peasant" rather than "people" when addressing the general public. It angers everyone as calling them "peasant". Would you be OK if a politician calling its people "peasant" in public? The fact that they are paid by public and calling them like that is very off-handed. It even became a bigger problem when the spokeperson is the extension of the president itself. That is quite a disaster and a blunder
While the word itself isn't quite the problem, its meaning and how it received was the problem. In the past, people were using the word "peasant" to actually refer to the common people. However as time has changed, the meaning do change. So, it is best to update and revise our knowledge rather than being fixated with the old times.
Language is fluid and it has the ability to adapt. So, that blunder was pretty expensive and I think it was just something on accident and the spokeperson didn't think through of it.
The thing is, we are not susceptible to that as well. Sometimes, just because the word we choose, we couldn't quite capture the meaning of the message that we wanted to convey. When I was teaching my student, I showed some differences when a person uses certain words and what it could mean for the other person that listened to it.
