Artificial Intelligence is here, learn to utilize it or be left behind.

  • I personally feel that the history of technological devlopment, adoption by society and subsequent large cultural changes, make clinging to the past and failure to embrace the future a trait of those left behind by society, and isolates you from the world.

History

  • History of this country in the 20th and 21st Century suggest that the speed of technological advancement, and the speed of adoption of technology are both accelerating.
  • The begining of the 20th century, the 1900's, witnessed one of the biggest revolutions in transportation, as man moved from relying on horses and horse drawn carriages to so called horseless carriages, we now call cars. This move was accompanied by the death of an industry devoted to horses, wagons, buggies, saddles, horseshoes and horse related products. Thousands of businesses closed, thousands of workers lost their jobs and the horse related industry was severely disrupted. The disruption of this industry was so complete, and the adoption of it's replacement was so fast, that by the second generation born in the 20th century, the horse had been all but forgotten, as a form of transportation, and was now more of a recreation for the wealthy.
  • This huge change was made possible not only by the technology called the automobile, but by the willingness of the people to disgard their horses and adopt the automobile. This was also made possible by Henry Fords Motto of making a car so cheap that all of his employees could afford one.

Adoption

  • As I look back at the emergence of the internet as a technology, and the slow, but then rapid adoption of the technology, and the arrival of internet based commerce, communications and education as novelties at first and now the predominant media where those things are conducted I am amazed.
  • When I look back on the adoption of internet, and both the death of many traditional retailers but also the growth of those new internet based retailers like Ebay, Netflixs, Amazon and Apple, I am reminded of not just the increasingly faster pace of technological innovation, but also the steady increase in the pace of adoption.
  • Each succeeding technological innovation seems to make it easier for the adoption of the next one. Online shopping and watching online movies were both novelties at first, but have become overwhelmingly common and truthfully ubiquitous parts of our culture. I think it's fair to say that most people shop online exclusively and a similar amount watch all their movies in the comfort of their own home online.

Utilization and Self optimization

  • I have watched people resist technological innovation by calling it a fad which will never catch on. But those who failed to learn technology frequently find themselves out of a job, or worse passed over for promotions and opportunities. Likewise, businesses which failed to embrace the internet, soon met their demise.
  • I have personally learned to embrace and learn all I can about technology, and use it to bring value to my work and my businesses. I have continued to prosper and thrive in a rapidly changing technological environment due to my willingness to educate myself voluntarily and often at my own expense. I am willing to learn new technology and figure out how to incorporate it into my workflow on my job. Many times even becoming the job place expert. This desire to learn and utilize new technology to help my companies thrive has made me more valuable and helped me survive and thrive in an ever changing economy.
  • I see AI or artificial intelligence as really no different from previous technological innovations which came before it. I see it the same way I saw computers and the internet. I see them not as beasts to be slain, but as beasts to be domesticated. These are technologies which will help me develop new skills and propel my workplace into the next century. I find that being a first adopter of technology makes me stand out and increases my value as an employee exponentially. It also opens avenues for side businesses which let me do things smarter and not harder.
  • Articial Intelligence and ChatGPT models don't necessaruly replace me, they can make me better. I bring years of experience and knowledge of my field to the table. Artificial intelligence brings huge databases to my fingertips and provides encyclopedic knowledge which my brain utilizes to do my job faster and better.
  • Artificial intelligence compliments me, and doesn't compete with me, because my brain thinks differently then an AI compeuter program. I am looking forward toone day being being coworkers with sentient AI robots, and perhaps one day we will even be friends or acquaintances.

What do you think?

Artificial intelligence is not going anywhere. So it is better to start using it.

Somehow, we've been led to believe that AI is here to replace us, which is like a half-truth to me. Technology has accelerated the rate of evolution and to keep up, we must learn to adapt and move along with it.

I agree.
We have nothing to fear, but fear itself.
We see a new animal called a horse, we must not shrink away from it in fear that it will run over us.
It might if we remain ignorant of it and get in it's way inadvertantly.
But those who learn to ride, sell rides or sell the horse, they are the ultimate winners.

True! Always open to experiment and trying out things instead of shutting it down altogether because we can't readily understand what it is.

I think some aspects of it are overblown - when you think that LLM’s are basically prompt - response pairs and the computer scans through them. It still requires humans to build them and it’s not exactly the thing we are fearing - yet. When they incorporate these things into robots and have them walking around streets and stores and stuff I think that’s where we have to have pause and concern. I think we are a few years off from that at the moment but that’s where my concern lies more.

I’ve been using AI a bit more in various aspects and find it helpful to summarize things if I don’t want to read it all but I do make sure to do the reading on some topics so that I find the details in between.

I agree that they are interactive right now and not truly autonomous. They are in my mind a variety of smart contract in an abstract way.
Good point about robots walking amongst us. I can see conflicts arising and humans being at the receiving end of metal man attacks.
What sources do you sue for summaries?
I think that would be very useful.
Thanks
