It is time for this week's edition of Market Friday and I'm sure you'd enjoy every bit of what I'm going to be sharing with you. Earlier this week I had to go to the market to buy stew and soup ingredients for the house. Due to my wedding ceremony that is scheduled for the end of this month, that is the 26th of February, 2022, we have been entertaining guests that have arrived for the event. There are some family members who will be assisting with some of the preparations who have arrived, so that means there is the need for constant cooking.

In view of this, I had to go to the market to purchase the necessary items that will be needed to prepare a pot of stew and soup. The soup that we intend to cook is melon soup (egusi soup), so basically all I needed is to get the ingredients that are needed for the soup. It is an easy soup to prepare, so all the ingredients are mostly sold by one person. I may not have to walk around the market too much except for the fact that if I'm not comfortable with the price that she's selling.

In preparing an egusi soup the major ingredient and the most important one that makes it egusi soup is the melon itself. It is the base for the soup. In the market, there are different types of egusi with different prices.

Some are tagged hand-picked, and some are tagged machine-picked. The major difference is that the machine-picked will be neater than the hand-picked, therfore making the aforementioned more expensive than the latter. Anyways, I opted for the machine-picked.

After buying the base for the soup then I have to buy a vegetable that will be used for the soup. The vegetable I often use for my egusi soup is ugu leaves, so I bought some as well as another vegetable that I fancy so much that is called oziza leaves. So for the soup I would be using the two leaves together. In addition, I bought some crayfish that will be grinded with the egusi.

I like the flavor that crayfish gives soup especially when it's grinded. Not only that but I also bought stock fish, this is a kind of bony fish that also gives meals a great flavor. Egusi soup is incomplete without locust beans, which Yoruba people call iru. It also gives meals a nice flavor that can not be resisted.

Afterwards, I proceeded to the meat section where I bought two kilograms of meat, one kilogram of beef and one kilogram of goat meat. Then I also got some cow skin, also known as ponmo.

Then, I bought tomatoes, pepper and onions for the stew which I grinded at the market to make it easier for me. On a good day I use to grind my pepper and tomatoes with my blender but since I'm buying quite a lot, so I had to do the grinding in the market.

Sorry but I don't understand what is egusi soup and what is crayfish, it's new to me. By the way, good luck with the wedding preparation.

Hello, egusi is a type of soup that is very popular in Nigeria. It is called melon soup in English.

Check this link of how I prepared it sometimes ago
