Market Friday at the Garden Center

in #hive-196308last year

As usual, I was too brain fried at the end of the busy work week to get my post up for Market Friday — the ultra fun initiative by the wonderful community builder, @dswigle! So maybe I should call it Market Friday/Saturday! (Yes I’ll be late for my own funeral. Ha ha.) Anyway, here we are.

Don’t you love a garden center?? OMG, the colors! It makes me want to buy more flowers than my property can support. So each year I go in with a plan and then stick to it.

I have a garden map, with everything plotted out so I hopefully don’t over-plant, and I have a working plan for my shopping trip to the garden center. I also support several fundraising plant sales, so I have to take that into account too!

Sometimes even if I’m not shopping for plants, I go out there just to absorb the color, and immerse myself in it. It makes me feel whole and happy after dealing with the very long, very cold winters we have here in Minnesota.

I have this idea that if I take it all in now, and truly appreciate its beauty, this color will stay with me through the next phase of cold and white that will inevitably return in several months’ time. I know I’m crazy! When winter comes I will lack the imagination that this splendor is possible!

Okay, want to see a few pictures of my garden in its current state? It is still in early mode, as we don’t plant here until May 15, which is when we pass the danger of frost, at last. So this is how it’s doing three weeks into the season.

Everything grows very fast here, like it knows it only has a bit of time. In three weeks my basil and cilantro have matured and gone to seed, my mint is exploding out of the pot, and I can already harvest lettuce!

I plant a combination of herbs, vegetables, annual flowers and perennials, with many attractors for bees and butterflies!

In the coming weeks, Lillie’s and many other plants will blossom and by the end of summer the garden will be a color extravaganza from a variety of sunflowers. Stay tuned!

Thank you, @dswigle, for hosting this wonderful weekly event. And thanks to those who stop by to check out my post!

You know I absolutely loved this one!! How could I not? I wasn't sure which was my favorite~!!!

Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday this week! It is always such a pleasure to have you. As you can see, I am running more than late here this week. For this, I'm so sorry. While I have read your market post (I have read them all!) I had some unexpected surgery that has me unable to finish most of them. While I am fine, the swelling, bruising, and healing have slowed me just a bit. I'll be good soon. Quite miserable until then!

I am happy to have read them all pf the posts and able to send out the upvotes. A partial win for me!
I truly appreciate all of the sharing of experiences and even more, when people visit others, starting a dialogue. This is what the vision of #MarketFriday was. The understanding for all.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can benefit a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you; it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday

Oh my, I’m sorry to hear about your unexpected surgery, @dswigle! That does not sound like fun. Glad you are recovering. I send you hugs and healing!

❤️

You got a beautiful garden, I will like to visit it soon. Good job

LEO Power Up Day - June 15, 2023

I do not envy you for those long cold winters further up north. It is nice just to walk around in the garden centers sometimes and take in the sight and smalls of the flowers. Your flowers are looking great as does your landscaping. You have done a wonderful job. It has to be a lot of work to take care of it after long hard winters there in Minnesota.

The wife and I also waited until about mid-May to plant everything. Ours are doing pretty good as well. We didn't plant a vegetable garden this year though. We do have two tomato plants and that is it.

We find that the tomatoes are what we really love. I often plant zucchini or cucumbers, but they always produce more than we can consume! With tomatoes, at least you can make a sauce or some salsa if you have too many!

We love them too. We planted one cucumber plant last year and it did real well. We decided not to plant anything this year because both our neighbors plant large gardens and bombard us with all their extra veggies. So we always have more than we know what to do with. No need to grow our own anymore 😀
