There is a news in the world of technology and software that has been spreading in the beginning of this week through the social network Twitter and in different blogs, and it is that GNU/Linux or Linux as an operating system has reached the 3% count in desktop computers. Users talk about this news with the seriousness that this implies and others in a jocular way, since it could be considered 3% as something insignificant in a market where Windows and OS X have been leading with almost 90% of the market share.

The source of the news comes from Statcounter GlobalStats, a website that compiles statistics on technology usage.

That 3% has been elusive for many years for those of us who love Linux and the goodness of free software and open source, the fact that in the month of June 2023 that percentage has been reached is reason to celebrate and spread the word.

For many of us who are users of the different distributions based on Linux, that it is used more or less by others may not be decisive, at the end of the day we are there because we like it and we are passionate about it and it works for us; however, it is true that where there is popularity and mass use, there is development, that attracts both new users, developers and companies interested in contributing capital. All this is very positive for any area of technology, and more so for Linux, where the lack of development of new applications and other existing ones, is due to the lack of financial support for the cost of projects.

This increase in the percentage of Linux on the desktop may be due to many reasons, but in my opinion I think it is due to two fundamental reasons, more stable and easier to use distributions and the great compatibility that Linux has reached both software and hardware. At the video game level there is still a big gap, but significant progress has been made, and software developers are feeling very comfortable with Linux distributions. Another concept that is appearing in the Linux universe is immutability, more stable and secure distributions for users who do not want to have full control of the system.

I would like to know your opinions, tell us which operating system you use and why.
