2022 Nobel Prize Winners in Physics - A Summary

in #hive-1963872 years ago

With over five hundred and sixty-two (562) Nobel Prizes being awarded between 1901 to 2022, in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace - an indication that several individuals and organizations have "conferred the greatest benefit to humankind."

It all started on the 27th day of November 1895, when businessman and entrepreneur, Alfred Nobel signed his last will at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris, leaving most of his wealth for the establishment of a prize in honor of individuals (or organizations) for their contributions in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. At first, it witnessed several oppositions which delayed the commencement till 1901. Since then, Nobel Prize has been awarded every year except during the world wars - world war I (1914-1918) and world war II (1939-1945). With the 2022 award still ongoing, most of the prize has been given - remaining The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences. However, the essence of this write-up is to briefly highlight the profile and contributions of this year's winners.

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics was shared between Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger, for their work with entangled photons, establishing the violation of the Bells inequalities, and pioneering quantum information science.

Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger, independently conducted experiments illustrating entanglement, a phenomenon in which two particles exist in the same quantum state - an entangled state. Hence, the perturbation of one particle instantaneously affects the other particle, no matter how far away they are, implying that information about the second particle can easily be predicted. This is a groundbreaking study that paves the way in quantum computing and quantum information science. for further reading, kindly click here
