Do you remember in my last post when I visited the beautiful region of Sesimbra? I mentioned that there was a very important path since there were dinosaur footprints of various species! My post today is a research post, basically I went into the Portuguese coast in search of dinosaur footprints, for which I had to carry out a pilot investigation of the areas that had records of preserved footprints! It is the first time that I do this activity and it was something unique. I hope you enjoy my discoveries and information!🧠🦖

The Cape Espichel area is known for being an area with strong erosion activity, the large rocks in the area suffered erosion by water and wind for millions of years giving different shapes and colors, this phenomenon of erosion in the rocks along with the movement of The tectonic plates give evidence of tracks with more than 150 million years very well preserved, more than a thousand tracks have been discovered in total of different species of both carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs, but why was this area so active?💡😮

This area presents great evidence of dinosaur activity because approximately 130 million years ago in Portugal this was the only area that had an ecological interaction with the sea, therefore, since there was an aquatic habitat, it was assumed that the animals would move in these areas. in search of food and shelter, due to the conditions of the land whose property is clay there is a greater erosion activity so that more than 100 years ago it was an area with land the erosion of the sea turned it into a cliff revealing the layers of the stones!🤔😮

While I am walking the path I am photographing the ecological conditions of the area and it strikes me that we see a vegetation with many bushes and few trees, but at the same time I thought that this probably had a very different environment there would be trees many meters high because there were herbivorous dinosaurs with very high necks, and in the blink of an eye I realize how the earth evolves in such different ecologies over the years! recently in 2021 it was possible to discover in this area some traces of crocodilomorphs, that is, very primitive crocodiles🤯🕵️‍♂️

Exactly 130-136 million years ago in the Lower Cretaceous it is believed that animals walked these lands, the research area where I am going is called (Jazida dos Lagosteiros) this is my first stop here if I am lucky I will be able to see a footsteps of one of the dinosaurs that dominated the Portuguese lands, the Allosaurus, was a powerful and agile carnivore that dominated the coastal littoral and whose prey were other herbivorous dinosaurs🦖😮

I reached my first point where I would look for the first signs of dinosaurs and of course I was lucky because I was able to recognize the footprints of a tetrapod, in this case the imposing Allosaurus fragilis, how do I know what a tetrapod footprint is? bibliographical references tell us that a tetrapod with a footprint with three pointed fingers, these animals were scientifically known as tridactyls! Luckily I didn't have to run into a live one because they are more than 7 meters long and weigh 4 tons, only the femur of the animal was 2 meters high.😮😮

*If we see the first finger from right to left, it complies with the description of a tetrapod, the three pointed fingers, despite the fact that the footprint is not very well preserved, we can imagine a little what its footprint was like and its size.🕵️‍♂️🦖🦕

I have to admit that it is such a brutal experience to be able to travel millions of years to see the footprint of an animal that ruled our lands and that was probably at the top of the food chain and had no competition on earth!😮😮

I continue with my research and now we go to the traces that were revealed by the erosion of environmental factors, water and air, and we can see how there are now clearly footprints of Sauropods, they walked the plains of Portugal more than 145 million years ago , here there is a lot of interesting information to highlight, due to the size of the footprints they were young, they measured between 1.5-1.8 meters only from the haunch, their behavior tells us that they could not run and that they walked at 3.4 km / h- 4.1km/h🤯🌅

Impressive right? how you can see a young sauropod walking in one direction, and not only is it alone, the data reveals that as they moved in groups they were gregarious animals, another clue reveals that there were some 2.8 meter haunches🤔🤯🔭

In this last area I investigate the most preserved footprints that I saw, they were discovered by some workers who worked extracting rocks in a quarry, noticing that the footprints on the stones had symmetry, they thought it was the record of an animal, but they had no idea what they had discovered footprints with 155 million years, here we date that the animals were from the Upper Jurassic it is believed that there was some body of fresh water in the area so more than 100 footprints could be discovered😮😮

In this video I explain what we see in the rock and also how the movement of the tectonic plates reveals the traces that have been covered by other layers of earth! it seems that the dinosaurs climbed the walls but when the tectonic plates exert pressure the innermost layers in the earth rise leaving the traces exposed on the surface🤔😮

Did you find one? 😀
How's it like to be chased by T-rex? 😜

Hehehe, I would not like to meet one xD, luckily for Allosaurus the t-rex did not inhabit these areas in the great pangea! According to research, the allosaurus was the largest predator in Portugal

I didn't know about allosaurus.
Thanks mate for letting me know. Have a blast!

Hola @oscurity.

very nice trip had some history about dinosaur footprints...i really like your story for today....

Thank my friend for the comment

You're welcome

I am wondering whether there is any museums close by where you could enjoy seeing skeletons and other remainders of dinosaurs. I imagine that having footprints available all over the place, the bigger parts of dinosaurs should also have been found there. Do you know by any chance where these are stored?

As usual, thanks a lot for these beautiful sunny pictures. Here, the weather is still very cold ;)

Hi friend! Some time ago I made a post where I recounted the discovery of the Allosaurus in Portugal, the bones were taken to the Lisbon museum there they have a collection of various bones from different dinosaurs! The weather is good it's 22 degrees but it's supposed to rain and we're in drought, climate change...

Oh I didn't know you already wrote on this. Do you have the link so that I could enjoy your post? :)

PS: yeah, climate change... :/
