You see, if you are the inquisitive type , or maybe you are the type that tends to wonder why a lot of things are the way they are, then I am certain that at some point in your life there would have been a time where you are listening to men and women speak , and suddenly you wondered why most men’s voices tend to sound like they’ve been dragged through gravel while most women’s voices tend to sound so smooth and melodic

First off, let’s go back to those awkward teenage years. Yes puberty, that time when your voice decides it's bored of the regular somewhat childish sound and wants to explore the various dimensions of adulthood. Both boys and girls go through it a voice change, but boys experience a more dramatic change. During puberty, the male hormone testosterone kicks in, and one of its many jobs is to transform that boyish voice into something that sounds like it belongs to a radio DJ, so to speak.
Here's the bit of science behind that transformation (don't worry, it simple). You know testosterone right ? The male hormone ? Okay this hormone literally causes the larynx, or voice box, to grow larger in boys causing the vocal cords inside the larynx to also lengthen and thicken. I want you to Imagine a guitar string, the thicker the string tend to be, the deeper the sound it makes. So, thicker vocal cords mean deeper voices.
Testosterone is not only peculiar to men, women also produce some testosterone too , the only difference is they dont produce nearly as much as men does. So, while their larynx does grow, it doesn’t get as big or as thick as those of men. This is why women’s voices generally remain higher and lighter.
But does it end with the level of testosterone ? Nope it doesn't , the size and shape of the vocal tract also play a part. Men tend to have larger vocal tracts, which lowers the pitch even further. Think of it like blowing across the top of different sized bottles. The bigger the bottle, the lower the sound and vice versa.

Now, let's learn some fun facts about voices shall we. Did you know that the deeper voice in men is actually a way of showing off? Yes, it's like nature's version of a fancy peacock tail. In the wild for instance, animals use their deep calls to show strength and attract mates. While we humans like to think we’ve evolved beyond the need for such primal displays, a deep voice can still be quite the head turner, you can ask the ladies to confirm.
However, deep voices are not just about attracting attention. They also convey authority and confidence. It’s why many public speakers and leaders seem to have those commanding, resonant tones. Think of famous figures like Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones. When they speak, people listen!
But don’t worry, ladies. Your voices are perfectly tuned for their own special roles. Higher-pitched voices can be more soothing and are often perceived as more approachable and friendly. Think about it, when you call customer service, wouldn’t you rather hear a kind, gentle voice on the other end? I don't know about you but I would definitely want one compared to a deep resonant one. A good example is the voice of Alexa.

So yes, the very next time you hear a deep voice, you’ll know it’s not just by chance. It’s a mix of biology, evolution, and some testosterone . And for the ladies, your voices have their own unique charm that’s equally important in the grand scheme of things, yeah hehe.
In the end, whether you speak and make the whole room rumble like a thunderstorm or you sound like a melodious bird, just know it’s nature's design or maybe a bit of environmental factors here and there. So I would say, embrace that unique voice of yours, no matter how it sounds because it’s part of what makes you, well, you. And who knows? Maybe the next time you speak, someone will be captivated by the personality behind that sound.
So do well to embrace your voice and of course, keep talking.
