Being an Indian it should not be surprising that I am in love with Indian food. Even when I travel, I am always on a look out for an Indian restaurant. Other cuisines I can manage for a day or two but after that I need my Indian food, else I start getting food withdrawal symptoms. Some months back when I travelled on a 3 weeks holiday to Italy and 1 week of cruise, in Italy the first thing I would check on maps was where are the Indian restaurants. In Rome I was lucky as there was one just next lane to our hotel, in other places it was a struggle. On cruise, they had multicuisine, so I would end up having Indian food most of the time. I do like to try out new foods but that would be occasionally. I go into depression if I cannot get Indian food for more than 6 to 7 days. If it's a long travel, I carry something with me for my convenience.
India is so huge and within the Country there are so many varieties of cuisines that one can never get bored of the food. India has 28 states and every state has its own cuisine specialty. Within these 28 states also there are people of so many different traditions and again here each one has their own specialty.
Last evening, I decided to visit an Indian restaurant for dinner with hubby and some friends. This place serves North Indian cuisine. I have mixed reactions for this particular cuisine, there are some foods that I am in love with and are my favorite, and there are some foods which I do not like at all. So mostly all different types of Kebabs and tandoor foods are my favorite, whereas food with curry is not my favorite, reason being it's too oily and spicy as well.
The story of this restaurant is; this is opened by a lady from Hyderabad city in India, who has been residing here since almost 25 years. When she had moved to Muscat, she was jobless and as a part time work, she would prepare Biryani and do home orders. Her food was very tasty and soon she became very famous, and then later on she started with a small food joint called Begums, over the years it has grown and now become one of the most famous food joints in Muscat. In India a royal title for a lady is Begum. They also opened a second branch some years back. Their Biryani is the most famous food and till date no one in the city beats them. There are many Indian restaurants in the city, but this one is so far the best and the most popular. It's not a fine dining place, so price wise also it is reasonable.
We visited their new branch, though it has been around 3 years they opened it we never visited since it's far from our home and their first one is near to our home. Sharing some pictures from my visit to the restaurant.
The interior of this place gives an indian touch, they have big frames of royal pictures from the indian history.
In the olden days brass utensils were widely used in India and they have some on show, giving that old indian touch.
We ordered a dish of kebab and one curry dish which was suggested by the chef, but the curry dish was extremely spicy, the chef did mention that it would be a little spicy, but this was extremely, but at the same time it was super delicious, so I did have it combining it with some Roti. Else I am not a Roti eater, but here I could not help it.
A very hearty meal it was and a good ambiance that makes me feel at home.
