Waking from my slumber, I heard singing coming from downstairs. I yawned, stretched, and lazily got out of bed wondering what my mum was up to. It was nearly ten, the sun was out and as I opened my curtains to the day, I smiled. Mum's voice wafted up again.
Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish?
I began humming the familiar tune and hurriedly made my way downstairs. Jumping down the last few steps I noticed the front door open and waved at my dad who was washing his car. He waved his damp sponge at me and returned to his task.
I found my mum in full swing as I opened the kitchen door. Her hands were deep inside a bowl gently kneading dough into a ball. Flour was on the table and over her apron, there was another bowl of freshly peeled apples next to her and even though it was obvious, I said:
Wat'cha doin?
To which she instantly replied.
Climbing a mountain!
And we both laughed together. Mum began singing again, this time with a meaningful look in my direction.
And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
I stuck out my tongue at her and pinched an apple slice from the bowl. I sprinkled it with some sugar and then began crunching into it.
Mum finished kneading the dough and wiped her floury hands onto her already flour-filled apron.
I'm glad you're up. You can help me with the washing up!
I groaned but didn't argue. Before long the first round of washing up was complete. Mum went back to her preparations. And very soon the tantalising smell of freshly baked apple pie was filling our home.
This will always be my favourite dessert, or possibly apple & blackberry pie, also made by my mum. Unfortunately, these days mum's apple pie is only a memory, and this memory is more fiction than fact but it's based on a happy childhood and a love that transcends time.

How long have you been with Hive? (a simple number is fine!)
Ummm... I think it's coming up to 3 months. My first post was 2 months ago...but...scrolling...scrolling...my first comment...scrolling... was...also 2 months ago. Hehehehe! Before that, I was on the legacy blockchain server about 3 years ago. I started there 4 years ago.
Have you ever written fiction before? (yes or no is fine! hehe)
Yes 💛
Are you familiar with Scholar & Scribe (They are SO excited to meet you!!!)
I am. I posted my poem, The White Goddess to the community 21 days ago.
Are you expecting this to be a fun challenge, challenging challenge, or exciting challenge, or are you really dreading writing publicly? (Be honest - we are here to cheer you on!)
Fun ✅ Challenging ✅ Exciting ✅
Are you going to TRY to go for the 3-part serial fiction (over 3 weeks), the engagement Bingo option, simply stick to SOME fiction this month for Scholar&Scribe or some other option altogether?
I will write a 3-part-serial fiction piece and engage as fully as I'm able.
