Adventure On The Last Day Of Summer - Farewell, Summer!

in #hive-1992754 months ago

Annette woke up very early as she had set her alarm to go off an hour earlier than her normal waking time. She got up and made her way to the bathroom to brush her teeth.

Going back to her bedroom, she sat down to have some meditative moments. This has become part of her morning routine for a few months now because she always feels ready to face her day after such sessions, but today was specially different from other days.

After a quick shower, she made herself a quick breakfast of buttered toast and egg, with a cup of coffee. As she ate, she smiled to herself, trying to remember the last time she leisurely enjoyed breakfast at home. Well, except for Saturdays perhaps. Oh, how she missed home!

She quickly switched her mind back to the moment. "I should be thankful that I got a very good job with a high pay," she thought. "In a few months, I should be out of the probation period, then I will be able to plan my annual leave to be during summer, and spend quality time with my family."

As she ate, she thought about how lucky she was to have an understanding boss. Mrs Adams had always treated her like her daughter ever since she joined the organisation. In fact, the reason she got a day off was because Mrs. Adams wanted her to enjoy a work-free last day of summer.

The sound of her phone ringing brought her out of her reverie, her face breaking into a beautiful smile as she saw the caller's name.

"Hello, babe," came the soft sweet voice at the other end, "I am right in front of your door."

Annette rushed to the door, flung it open, and hugged Jane who was grinning from ear to ear.

Once inside, the two friends chatted lightly for a while. They had a full day ahead of them, and they wanted to make the most of it.

Stepping out of Annette's house and into Jane's car, they drove to a new shopping mall that had just opened in town. They wanted to take a look at some of the clothes on display in some of the fashion shops in the mall, as they knew summer was ending and they needed clothes to keep them warm in the fall as autumn begins. A little change to their wardrobe was completely in order.

Their next stop was at the park for a picnic. Jane had come with flasks of food, and they had taken a few bottles of water and soft drinks from Annette's house. As they had their picnic at the park, the two friends talked about how differently they would spend their next summer vacation in the coming year, the places they would love to visit and what the cost implication would look like. The more they shared ideas, the more they felt that it would be a great idea to start saving towards it.

They were contemplating going to watch a movie when Jane got a call from her mother, asking her to come home as quickly as possible. Janet knew that that there was no cause for alarm, rather her parents must have come up with a surprise.

As they got to Jane's house, they found that a few neighbours were there, and there was a barbecue set up and some card and scrabble games going on.

Jane's mother welcomed the two girls with a hug. "Sorry to interrupt your outing, but I felt you wouldn't want to miss this," she explained. "We just thought a little get-together would be a great way to bid farewell to this year's summer."

"That sounds good, mum", replied Jane. "I had been wondering what you would come up with again this year."

Food, games, music and friendly chatter made the whole place lively. As, the evening was progressing, one could feel the temperature dropping slightly, signalling the departure from summer to autumn.

For Annette, it was also a signal to take her leave from there, as the day was far spent. A few minutes later, she got down from Jane's car, with a few shopping bags in her hands.

Letting herself in, she knew exactly what next to do. First, she put a call across to her mother to check on her family, and was glad to hear that everyone was doing fine.

Next thing was to run her bath, and soak in the warm, foamy water containing drops of scented bath oils.

After bathing, she picked up her journal to write, for she needed to keep a memento of the day's events. Perhaps, she would try to print some of the pictures she took today, and create a scrap book.

She turned off her room lights, walked to the window to pull back the curtains. She blew a kiss to the night sky and said, "Farewell, Summer! See you next year."

Then off to bed she went, thankful for how enjoyable her day was, allowing herself to dream about the plans she had for the coming year. There was no need setting an alarm as it was already weekend.
