Dyan's Goodbye | Chapter 25 Part 10
Dyan turned to all the Blue children. “I guess this is goodbye for good.”
“Make more books and become well-known so that when we grow up and I’m a famous game creator, we’ll cross paths again,” said Navy.
Dyan laughed. “Bye, Navy.” They fist-bumped.
“I’ll never forget you, Dyan. I’ll try to make all the memories of us having fun together happy ones, instead of sad ones.” said Royal, wrapping her in a hug.
Dyan nodded. “Me too.”
Maya pat Dyan’s shoulder. “See you, Dyan. You’re super awesome and much braver than you think. I know you’ll do really big things. Well, you technically already have, since you published a book and all, but I mean you’ll do more big things. Hold on, I’ll write Mom’s number on a piece of paper so you can call me wherever you are, whatever home you go to.”
Dyan’s smile grew and she nodded. “I’ll call you as soon as I get settled somewhere!”
True ran to Dyan and wrapped her small arms around her legs. Dyan hugged her back. All the kids came in for a group hug. Maya was the first to let go, running to the van. She tugged on the door. “Where’s the car notebook Mom? In the glove box!?”
“Hold on! I’ve got the keys, Maya.” Mrs. Blue yelled to her and gave the keys to Royal. “Unlock the car for your sister please?”
Maya heard this and frowned. “Why can’t I unlock the car myself!?”
Mrs. Blue nearly choked on air. “Are you crazy!? After this stunt you just pulled, You’re not being trusted around keys to a vehicle again.”
While the rest of the Blue children discussed their versions of this morning (and Maya stirred everything around in the glovebox searching for a notebook), Dyan looked up at Mr. and Mrs. Blue. “Sorry for all the trouble I've caused you. You guys were the best caregivers I’ve ever had. Your family is amazing, and I hope one day in the future, I’ll see you guys again.”
True, who still had her arms wrapped around Dyan’s legs, stuck out her lip and pouted. “I don’t want Dyan to leave!”
“I’m low-key gonna miss Dyan,” Wild Yonder said, turning to Azure, who nodded. “Me too.”
Dyan sighed, and hesitantly made her way to Miss Madalia’s car.
Mr. and Mrs. Blue looked at each other for a moment. Mrs. Blue nodded her chin over to Dyan and smiled.
Then Mr. Blue followed suit. “Are we really gonna do this?”
Mrs. Blue thought for a moment. “Yes! Dyan!”
Dyan, who was halfway to Madalia’s car, turned back to them.
“Come back here!” Mrs. Blue yelled, and Dyan jogged back over to Mr. and Mrs. Blue.
Dyan searched their faces and hands for what could be making them smile this big. “Did I forget something?”
“Yes. You forgot that family sticks together. So you can’t just leave like that.” Mrs. Blue stretched her arms out in her puffy green coat.
“But… I’m not a part of your family,” Dyan said, confused.
“Not true. We’re adopting you.” Mr. Blue smiled so big all his teeth showed.
It took a moment for this information to process in Dyan’s head. She gasped.
“Really!?” Maya leaned out of the van.
“Yes! Somebody to lend an extra hand with chores!” Wild Yonder dragged a fist down.
All the Blue kids chattered with joy and laughter to the point where it sounded like Dyan was in a beehive.
“Looks like you're coming with us!” Royal smiled.
“Forget notebook paper, I won’t even need it now!” Maya ran and hugged Dyan, shaking her this way and that.
This had to be the fiftieth hug Dyan had received that day, but she returned it. Tears came to her eyes.
“I can’t believe it! Thank you!” she yelled, and ran to hug the Blue parents. She closed her eyes and enjoyed the warmth of Mr. and Mrs. Blue’s arms wrapping around her.
Madalia had been waiting on Dyan to come for twenty minutes in counting. The car was already heated up. She huffed and went back out in the cold. She walked up to the Blue family crowded in the middle of the highway, all smiles and bright blue hair.
“What is this large crowd gathered for?” Madalia asked, her voice lower than her usual cheery tone.
“Mam, we’d like to adopt Dyan.” Mr. Blue said proudly.
After hearing one sniffle from Dyan, who was a mess of tears and a smile, Madalia couldn’t help but smile back. “Well she’s certainly going to have a large family.”
