This story was brought to me in a dream, so it only fitting that it would be for @dreemsteem and posted on the Dreamport website. @dreemsteem is always doing her part in the community to bring us all together on some level.
This time she is bringing together Dreemport.com and @scholarandscribe while including @ecency as the platform.
Scholar & Scribe have a writing community on the ecency platform in which they promote and incentivize the Hive writing authors and readers. Dreemport has a curation website that allows members to read, vote and rank the article written by other Dreemport authors.
The task for this challenge is to write a fiction story and post it to the Scholarandscribe community, on ecency, and then go to the Dreemport website read and vote for others’ posts to submit your story there. Other Dreemport members will curate your posts in return.
I normally post on peakd, and I am new to using and posting in communities, so this is already a challenge for me. But so far, so good. I did write my first post on Peakd, in haste… But you can check it out Here.
The next challenge is to write a fiction piece that is posted in three separate posts. Since I only have the very basics of my story completed, and I hate outlines, you will be discovering “The Life of Jacob Konnor” along with me as I attempt to keep you on the edge of your seats between posts!
The Life of Jacob Konnor
Jacob Konnor stood high above the mountaintop, his legs strong and posed for the lift off. The tension rose between he and the other racers as the timer began counting down from ten to zero. The gunshot echoed in his ears. Jacob pushed off with his poles and the freefall down the hillside began.
Back and forth he leaned his body, towards the wind and then against, gaining more and more momentum as he soured forth, much faster than the other skiers. There was no one ahead of him this time. He was going to win.
On each side of him were rows of tall pine trees, covered in snow and swaying in the wind. Jacob passed each obstacle with ease, avoiding the occasional curious bunny rabbit. He could see the red ribbon at the end of the hill. He heard nothing but the strong scream of the crisp mountain breeze.
As he broke through the finish line, the crowd cheered his name, “Konnor! Konnor!”
Ah woah, what a rush he thought.
“Jacob, Dr Morris is here to see you.”
“Not another psychologist! You know Linda if you put a space in therapist you get ‘the rapist’.”
“Jacob, I have a busy day, and I love you…”
“But…”
“But you are on the board of directors at the hospital. They need to be sure you are of sound mind. I really don’t think missing your therapy session to play virtual reality is an acceptable excuse, nor will it make you look good in any light.”
Jacob sighed, “Please remove the headset for me.”
Linda lifted the headset from Jacob and then smiled. It was good to see his face.
He seemed to spend more and more time in the virtual world. In her opinion he was only avoiding reality. The past few months caring for her husband has taken its toll, leaving Linda with little energy for dealing with Jacob’s humorous defense mechanisms.
“You really need to talk about your accident. If you won’t talk to me then you should talk to Dr. Morris. She’s the best in her field, and the hospital board members respect her opinion.”
“I’ll try my best to put on a good show. I promise.” Jacob said and then added a wink.
Linda leaned toward Jacob for a kiss, but he turned away.
“I’m sorry Linda, I’m still not there yet. I need more time.”
“I understand. I’ll send in the Doctor.”
Jacob wondered what kind of person Dr. Morris would be. He wondered if his appearance would shock or repulse her. He’s had many different reactions to his “condition” as they called it.
He knew in his own professional experience that those machines were keeping him alive. He knew without them he’d no longer exist.
“Dr. Konnor, I’m Dr Morris.” Her voice was sweet, calm, and pleasant. She walked farther into the room and Jacob watched in admiration.
“It’s very nice to meet you Dr. Morris.” Jacob smiled. She never once looked away but kept hold of his dark blue eyes with her own. She impressed him and now he was intrigued to know more about her. “What brings you here to my humble abode?”
Dr. Morris looked around the grand office. The rugs alone probably cost more than her house. Still, she smiled and ignored the comment.
“I am here to evaluate your state of mind for the board. But you know that already. So, if you are asking why me, then I’d have to say that I have a specialty in treating those in your, ‘condition’”.
There’s that word again, Jacob thought.
“And the board after all this time is suddenly concerned?”
“Dr. Konnor, it’s only been six months since your accident, you have refused to talk about it with any of your friends, family, or doctors. Frankly, they are concerned that if you hold it in too long, you will explode. Dealing with your feelings is part of healing. Don’t you want to heal?”
“Lady, with all due respect, I can’t ‘feel’ anything in my ‘condition’. I have continued to see patients virtually, when needed, but most of my diagnostic research needs to be dealt with ‘hands-on’ and I can’t very well do that with no hands, can I?”
“Are you saying you no longer wish to be on the board of Directors?” Dr. Morris asked and then tilted her head, clearly trying to read his thoughts.
“That is not what I said.” Jacob replied, clearing his throat.
“Then this brief assessment is required. Trust me I think you will feel better once you begin to deal with the feelings of loss.” She sat down in the chair directly across from him. “First, tell me what you think of yourself now.”
“Now, I'm nothing more than a head in a box.”
To be Continued….
