PRELUDE
If you study the story and mythology of ancient people you will notice that many civilizations share really similar stories across the world.
From creatures like vampires, werewolves and small magical beings that play tricks to godly figures that rise from the dead and pyramids, the old people shared many similar stories and costumes even though they haven't had contact with each other.
Sure, you can say that a pyramid is the most efficient way of stacking big blocks of rock and those mythical beings represent primal fears that are intrinsic to human nature, but what if it was more than mere coincidence?
Human memory is failed and our history is cyclical, what once was considered history became stories that were no more than cautionary tales, but they were real and dangerous for humanity.
Our world is just one layer in a multiverse of dimensions and realms, we used to be able to reach those other worlds and in turn they could reach ours.
The exchange at times was really beneficial. We could receive knowledge and energy from higher beings who were benevolent enough to want to help lesser evolved creatures get to a higher understanding but there were also lower beings wanting to prey on us and evolved entities aiming for our resources.
Fearing for what could happen without our world being advanced enough to withstand theses threats, several ancient high sorcerers devised a protective measure with the help of entities that could easily be mistaken as gods: the veil of reality.
Life inside the snow globe
This veil blocked the exchange of energy with other planes and locked earth in a bubble. Soon, knowledge became distant memories and life followed its course with a bigger focus on advancing technology to solve everyday problems instead of arcane means.
Believing is a powerful thing and at the same time doubting is equally so, the cynicism about the existence of the occult and sobrenatural strengthens the veil while truly believing can cause tears. Those small breaches can be caused from both sides (although the veil is way more sturdy from the outside) and in the time it takes to heal things can squeeze through it, explaining why humanity hasn't completely forgotten about those "myths" and why there are still sightings of cryptids and the like.
The veil would have resisted for many more millennia if not for some types of plants that have neural interference capacities.
When stoners says they feel "enlightened" after blazing a bud they are being more truthful than people give them credit for. No wonder so many priests and shamans use hallucinogenic plants on their rituals!
When the world finally legalized weed for use in its entirety and the use of transgenics making it extremely potent, the sudden growth in the number of users who got enlightened and thus were once again believing in multiple dimensions and realities was too much for the veil to withstand.
Luckily the changes were gradual and humanity had enough time and help to adapt. It was clear that weed was now one of the most valuable resources in the new status quo and that should be the focus to fending off the otherworldly threats.
When those apocalyptic problems started, some prophecies turned out to be true: the dead now roamed the earth for the gates of hell are open and only its creek echoes were heard throughout the empty halls of the underworld.
But not only bad things happened!
The enlightenment from weed didn't benefit only those more inclined to the arcane, scientists also received a boost and many notable technological advances where achieved.
Robots and the cultivation technic became better, the plants also were optimized so you wouldn't need anything else to feel satiated and to get your daily required nutrients. Although after blazing people would still get famished so other types of crops started to be made as leisure, the most popular one being the pizza crop.
Humanity, in the face of those new threats and advancements, had finally reached peace between themselves and now puff the buds of wrath with their new allies in the face of their common enemies, for they are the HashKings.
