Intro:
Every once in a while you'll see me inviting people to chat with me on cornychat. Corny Chat is an app that allows users to do audio-only voice chat, similar to spaces on X.com, without any kind of sign-up process.
Although there is no mandatory sign-up process the app does give you some extra features if you sign in with a Nostr account.
If you're coming onto Nostr from Hive for the time, the community there can be a handful at times. It feels like 95% of the Nostr community are Bitcoin Maxis. But I've learned to interact with them in a way that doesn't ruin the platform for me.
Here's How I do it
The List
1) Have a thick skin
Nostr is a place full of Bitcoin Maximalists and a good number of them are passionately opinionated. They believe in "Bitcoin Only" and everything else is a "Shitcoin".
And boy do they love to call things "shitcoins"... lol
You just have to have a thick skin about it. They get some funny jokes off sometimes, but the overall term can be a little overdone. Just be ready for it.
No matter how much better other technologies are built for what they are trying to accomplish on Nostr, in their view, Nostr is Bitcoin and if it's not Bitcoin then it's a "shitcoin".
2) Approach Nostr with curiosity
A lot of the folks on Nostr just want you to know that they're smart, and you can use their desire to be viewed as smart to your benefit. I do a lot of observing and asking questions, and I've gained a lot just by doing so...
There are a lot of new terms and tools to learn in Nostr and you'll need someone with Nostr experience to break down the different tools and terms for you. The terms in Nostr can be confusing and the lightning network side of things is all over the place.
I think they've overcomplicated some of the tools on purpose so they can sound smart when they're explaining it to other people, but that's just my little conspiracy...
But the main thing is just to find a group to rock with and learn as much as you can from them. Be sure to ask them plenty of questions and learn fast.
3) Find Nostr tools you enjoy and stick to those tools
Nostr has its places where it shines, and right now it's the audio streaming apps for me. These are apps similar to spaces on x.com or clubhouse but with extra features for people with Nostr keys.
Anyone can use the apps like cornychat.com or Hivetalk.org to talk or text chat but users with Nostr keys can zap sats to other users and have access to some other cool features.
These apps are the most "social" apps out there and allow me to interact with people in a live and direct way.
They're just fun apps!
On Nostr, I mainly use the audio streaming apps more than the Nostr blogging apps. These are what I like. I plan on making some emojis and badges in Nostr, but even those would support what I'm talking about in my streams and podcasts.
4) Disarm Bitcoin Maxis with games and humor
Some folks are tight asses and don't have a sense of humor, but most people aren't above a good laugh. Especially on these chat streaming apps, most people just want to either have their gripes heard or have a good time.
I lean into the side of having a good time...
There are plenty of websites that allow you to play board games or card games with the people in your friends in chat. And on Hivetalk.org you can share your screen and do movie nights or watch videos with your friends in chat.
As you all know, I love making memes. They're fun, quick, and entertaining. and one pic is worth 1,000 words. If you know how long it takes to write a 1,000 word blog post vs a meme then you know... lol
I share these on my chat thumbnails and sometimes I get a cool meme that people enjoy enough to come in and say hi.
5) Don't shill your coins, share your experience
When talking to Maxis on Nostr about other projects on Nostr, you have to understand that as soon as you say a project other than Bitcoin, Maxis think you're stupid.
So what I like to do is share my experience with them more so than highlighting the project that I think is better than Nostr for different things.
Example: I believe Hive is the best place on the internet for creating blogging and vlogging content, data ownership, and earning based on the data you share with your audience. But I don't necessarily say this to Nostr people all the time, I just share what I've experienced on Hive over the past 8 years and also how a Hive tool, v4v.app, put me on to Podcasting 2.0, the lightning network, and opened my mind to some of the apps on Nostr.
V4V.APP is undeniably an amazing app. It gives both Hive and Lightning Network users access to the best parts of both networks.
As much as I love Hive and all of our tools. Nostr and Lighting Network definitely has some amazing tools to offer as well. We can set up our keepsats v4v.app wallets to receive our zaps and boost people may gift us on Nostr and zap them as well.
