The News

I will start with the usual chart that I just generated. There is a real gap opening between $HIVE and the crappy old blue coin.

Prices from @coingecko

The title is only partly a joke. I have done pretty well from this platform. That is largely from engaging with people and going to events, so I get a lot of support. I know there are plenty of automatic votes that I do appreciate, but I want people to use their votes where they are needed. You do not need to vote on or re-post my posts to get my support if your content is good. Support the posts that deserve more than they get. I really do not mind making less as I do fine from curation. I am using @commentrewarder to share what rewards I do get.

As we start a new year when this platform will pass nine years I hope that it can grow somewhat. Each of us can play a part in that by talking to people who may be interested. What we need are more good content creators who will draw in others. If you need accounts to be created then let me know as I can do that for free.

Friday Follows

I will start the year with a load of cool people you could check out. Follow those who share your interests so that your feed is fun.

We each have different tastes, so find what works for you.

The Dog House

I saw @bozz did his own version of this today and @livinguktaiwan had a moan about various abuse.

I saw a case this week of someone who churns out daily posts that they self-vote. Not only that, but they have a couple of proxy accounts that are also involved and they exploit some of the tokens you can get for mentioning them. I have reported this to the projects. It turned out that the main account was getting votes from me as it was on a trail I follow. They are getting dropped by that, so their rewards will drop. The actual content is not that terrible, but this is just not the way to use Hive. With a little effort they could build a following, but they do not even try.

Some people look out for persistent self-voters and may downvote them. It really is not worth doing as small accounts will not make much and bigger ones will be seen as selfish. I have heard all the arguments about 'my content deserves more', but it is up to the community to decide that. Vote for others and you can still earn whilst perhaps gaining some respect.

The End

What are your hopes for 2025? There are lots of issues around the world and we need less division. I know Hive helps some people get by and that is important.

I aim to keep building my HP so that I can spread more rewards. Most of my voting is manual and based on what I like. I do not trade votes or expect favours.

Tomorrow I will generate a fresh #britlist. I did some for other countries last year, but I will leave it to local communities to continue the work. Just let me know if you need some help to get started.

Happy new year and Hive five!

That's my only target in 2025. I am trying to defeat the "distractions". I hope that I can do that and increase my HP.

Thanks for recommending those users.

Have a great 2025

Upvoted despite your title. So there!

You listed several musicians. Do you know whether anyone is creating a music curation project now that the stickupboys are closing down theirs?

It seems I can't stop people using their votes as they want. What a rebellious lot!

I do delegate to @music-community. I think there may be other music curation projects. I just like to keep control of most of my HP, but I may support more.

We need to get musicians outside Hive aware of it. The ones who are here should mention it on their other social media. Hive may be small, but I bet some of them earn more here than on the others.

I usually prefer to manage most of my own HP manually, but I plan to be offline and on the road a lot in 2025, so I'd like to delegate my HP instead of just letting it sit.

That's fair enough. I do delegate or automate my voting if I will be travelling.

@jacobtothe I would like to be a curator for some kind of alternative music on Hive. Don't have any idea how to do that and still there's no one playing alternative music here. It seems there's nobody interested to listen to it either...

I really would like to see more rock, metal, punk, electronic and so on here. And I'm ready to contribute as much as I can to support them.

This morning, my data was back to what I expect it to be. Thanks again for you help and advice. My max vote value to increase in the next couple of days.

Thanks so much, dear Steve!
About the hopes for 2025 I agree with you when you say "there are lots of issues around the world and we need less division". I really don't know how we could solve it, but I'm pretty sure the little things each of us do every day can help to change a little the minds, step by step. ❤️

Nice list. I'm following almost everyone on your list. Anyway, I vote for the post and reblog it 😎.

You are most welcome. I would love to see more people promoting their music here like you do.

But if I don't vote your posts I'm not contributing to the tips that comment rewarder is giving away 😅 personally I don't upvote so many posts so my vote doesn't get too low. I mean, for me it's not a concern voting you, and this way I contribute to spread my vote to others too, right?
I'm voting who I want anyway ahah

It's entirely up to you how you vote, but try to do it effectively. I get people voting up comments that will not pay out.

Upvoted anyways 😁

We love your support by voting @detlev.witness on HIVE .

I'm hoping that leo can bring in a few more large communities like they did with dash and really breathe some life into the place.

It wouldn't take much to bring users back in and even a few new devs that want to build here too.

IT would be a shame if we can't break free of the other chain and drive on.

I'm not seeing much uptick in activity yet, but I hope their efforts are effective. Maybe it's all on Threads that I do not look at much. People need to explore all that Hive offers.

The improved price may tempt some back, but we have been earning all along. The 'old chain' has no real development, so ought to die. It's just exploited by a few people.

They have grown from 5k monthly users to 13k over the past year. Mostly on threads and a big portion in the past few months.

Not a bad jumping off point for 2025 as i think they are partnering with chainlink next.

Activity is good. I just don't find the Threads experience that appealing. It seems you get different sorts of posts on there, Snaps and Waves.

Happy new year and let's hope for Hive communities growth!!

Interesting. I thought self-voting stopped being a problem a good while ago. I hope it won't come back, as that wasn't fun, and with a 50/50% author/curation rewards split, it makes little sense to self-vote instead of curating others. Other than for visibility on very limited occasions for certain comments, I suppose.

It's always gone on. I will admit I did it in the really early days, but then I was making nothing. Since my vote had some value I want to use it on others. I think it's just a habit for some, but it just seems wrong to me.

Yeah, I used to self-vote too in the early days. Back then, it was almost necessary, since curation rewards algorithm was favoring such a behavior. But nowadays, it's simply doesn't.

I have just noticed via Ecency that few of my posts are viewed let alone read. Posts on my own website have many more views.
I'm also hoping that I'll find some answers to unexplained changes to my data which happened overnight. The details are in my latest post.

I used to run my own blog, but got few views or comments. I do much better on Hive. You only have 22 followers who may not all be active. This platform puts the onus on you to get attention.

I had a quick look at your account. I don't see any downvotes in the activity. It may just be a glitch in the stats.

Yes, you're definitely one of Hive's successes. A good point about the followers - I accept the onus is on me.
Thanks for looking at my account. It helps to reduce any potential smearing of my reputation. Also thanks for the info on stopping powering down.

I have just been very active, but that means my hourly rate is not great :)

I wouldn't worry too much about your account if you have kept your keys safe. Keep an eye on the activity anyway. You can change the keys if you have concerns.

My keys are safe. I didn't know about changing keys - thanks.

Hey @steevc, here is a little bit of BEER from @pardinus for you. Enjoy it!

We love your support by voting @detlev.witness on HIVE .

There was a bit of discussion on the HIVE discord about selfvote recently too that I was involved in.

I've always seen it as Self-voting is largely a community consensus rule, It's selfish and greedy but it's allowed by the chain.

My personal feelings on the matter is that self voting should be blocked at the very least on the front end level and that a VERY CLEAR message that selfvoting is not allowed be sent.

It's bad user experience to be able to do an action but be told to not do it because it's bad when you are still able to do it. Either block it completely or educate. Neither we seem to be doing.

I'd had thought blocking at that chain level, rejecting accounts that vote on posts they own would be best but one downside is this is bypassable by simply delegating or having the bulk of your HP on another account and upvoting.
This makes it more difficult to detect actual abuse in the latter setting which is likely why it's not really been implemented.

The frontend level is the next step, this will prevent and send a clear message to the vast majority of users (assuming all frontends implement it) that self voting isn't allowed but again your own frontend/bot/etc and you can freely selfvote.

With this scenario you don't really have a detection issue and you kinda naturally filter out a lot of the more innocent users who might not know any better. Giving a better user experience to normal users and those who want to abuse and go out of their way to do so will be easier to see imo.

It's a annoying messy subject that honestly the worst part of it all is the mixed messages and poor user experience it generates.

As you say, it is impossible to block it totally. The front ends ought to discourage it anyway. I see big accounts doing it and they are less likely to get a vote from me.

You can support the Topcomment initiative by delegating HP
| 10 HP | 25 HP | 50 HP | 100 HP | 250 HP | 500 HP | 1000 HP |

I also wish it could be blocked. It's all too easy to accidentally upvote yourself - especially when there are many replies in the thread.

I had already upvoted this comment. Thanks for the mention.

What is good content? Who decides this?

Is the content that gets a big upvote by a whale better than the content that gets 100 upvotes by minows?
In the end the 1 big upvote is more worth in HP than 100 upvotes. Is it then better?

What is good content? Who decides this?

You decide it. We can each use our votes as we see fit. Of course automating it is not ideal and people will support their friends, but no system is perfect.

I keep saying we need more big accounts as this will spread the rewards more. Most of my votes are manual and often go to posts that would not get much otherwise.

Gracias por tus sugerencias amigo inglés , espero llegar algún día a🔋a ser como tú en la plataforma , sé que estoy lejos de serlo pero seguiré intentando .

We can each give our best. I'm just a regular guy who is having fun.

As a small account I don’t want it to seem like I’m ungrateful for the support you give me so I reblog your posts. I mean after all they’re very interesting and I want to share interesting stuff :)

But a huge thank you for always upvoting my posts and being supportive 🙏🏻. Happy New Year Steve, I wish you all the best!!

I really don't expect anything in return, so do what you like. There's lots of cool stuff to share, so give your followers a taste.
