FU Twitter, I'm Done!

in #hive2 years ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I think I'm done with Twitter. The censorship, the propaganda, the content, it's all grown completely out of control. I'm done!

Like the Steem debacle, I was just getting ready to leave Twitter when Elon decided to take over. I had hoped things would improve so I decided to stick around a little longer. I had made some good friends there and at one time I found Twitter to be really fun and entertaining. For a moment it seemed like things would improve with Elon at the helm. That was probably just wishful thinking on my part though. IMHO, I think it has gone from bad to worse. Maybe that's just my experience but I'm done.

I have to say this... I think Twitter is a psyop, the algo has been weaponized, and I think its only purpose is to spread disinformation, control the state-approved narrative, and spread FUD both related to crypto and current world events.

My reasoning for that statement is very simple, I've done everything in my power to rid my feed of propaganda and nothing works. I stopped clicking on covid links. I stopped clicking on politics. I stopped following people that focused on politics and topics I didn't like. (That pissed a lot of people off) ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Just saying. Nothing worked. I even got baited into clicking links a couple of times. (an earlier post but most who read it agreed). The FUD that flows so freely across Twitter is not only about the crypto markets but life and politics in general. I can't prove it, but my guess is that it's intentional. I guess this makes Musk just another shill and stooge of the new world disorder. That's my take on it at least.

Take a moment to think about this. That platform censored close to EVERY Tweet that had to do with Covid and Election Fraud. A task most people felt was impossible to achieve yet every Tweet on those two topics were not only censored but almost like an actual army (possibly bots) of replies repeating the state approved narrative on both topics. Regardless of where you stand on either of those topics, the idea that they were able to achieve this should be alarming to most. Yet, they can't do anything about scam bots taking advantage of users or some of the unsavory content that appears from time to time. (Scam bots have gotten better, but there's still a lot of that going on). If I was skeptical before, I'm downright convinced now...

I hate to say this, but at this point, I feel it's all intentional. Twitter is the way it is because it's meant to be that way by design!

The Two Straws That Broke The Dood's Back

Here are the two straws that broke the camel's back for me. My trending topics are always full of really strange topics. Almost always politics, propaganda, or negativity. Rarely do I find "happy" trends or anything that would make most people smile. Occasionally a crypto project might trend but for the most part, I only find misery, war, lies, disease, disinformation, and things I'd rather not want to see. I used to keep my trending topics in Japanese because I didn't read Japanese. Nobody should have to go to those lengths to control the content in their feed.

Yes, I know the world isn't all rainbows and unicorn farts. I also have a fairly thick skin, so if it gets to me, I could just imagine how that affects other people. I sincerely feel these social media algorithms are a huge contributor to the growing mental health crisis in both this country and many others. The algos have been weaponized in my humble opinion and they are radicalizing the masses on both sides of the narrative.

Screenshot of how my trending topics almost always looks.

I'm curious. Is it just me? Do your trends look like this daily? Is this some weird conspiracy like the Facebook psyops we keep ignoring but keeps resurfacing in the news? Why would the general public go along with any of this? (Unfortunately, most are behind paywalls, but other sites will have people screaming conspiracy theorists) Every article doesn't implicate Facebook, but it's obvious they are complicit. I know this has nothing to do with Twitter, but I have to think if one is doing it, all the FANG companies are doing it. Here are a few headlines from supposedly respectable sources.

Conspiracy aside, I had enough when I found "Demonic" trending in my sidebar. I took the clickbait just like last time and was sickened and shocked by what I saw. Apparently, someone had discarded an unborn fully developed child in a box. That was the first image that greeted me. A dead baby in a box next to a pile of trash in a back alley somewhere. I didn't read the article, I just logged out and closed Twitter for the night. I was going to share the image here, but then I'd just be part of the problem too. Nobody should have to see stuff like that unless the sick bastards go out of their way to find that sort of content. I wasn't! Oh, on top of that, the image was on the side of the most liked, not the most recent. So that post had been sitting there for hours. It wasn't just bad luck for me to click on the link to find that top image.

That night I lay in bed contemplating what I had just seen. At one time Twitter was a very powerful trading tool for me. I used it to gather the latest crypto headlines and also gauge market sentiment as well as find new projects to research. I made a little money monthly through affiliate links, but that ended after Binance removed US customers. Honestly, Twitter hasn't been profitable for me in either income or information for a very long time. IMHO the real currency of Twitter is the information it provides and frankly, it's been producing some really CRAP information. I then spent the next several hours debating how much value if any Twitter brings into my life.

This is the second time I left. I took about a two-week break last time I quit but logged back in to gauge the market sentiment as the SBF/FTX debacle began to unfold. During those two weeks prior, I felt a noticeable difference in my attitude. I was happier and not so agitated by world events. Honestly, I felt like a different person and much better. Returning to my contemplation, I reluctantly decided to keep Twitter.

The following day, it was almost like Elon was taunting me with this Tweet. It was the first Tweet that loaded the following day and the very straw that broke the camel's back. Maybe, it was a message from the Universe knowing exactly how I'd react. It's a cute joke, but so true. Enough already, I'm not getting any real value from Twitter in its current form. I have to weed through a mountain of propaganda to find any useful crypto info. I'm done.

Apparently Elon is addicted to Twitter too and justifies it as work 🤣

Unfortunately, there is some truth in that meme. As many of you already know, I'm not a huge fan of social media to begin with. I discovered the crypto community on Twitter or CT or Crypto Twitter as we like to call it researching crypto. Over time I made some friends, joined in the fun, and came to enjoy having Twitter open all day as I worked and played on my computer. It was nice chiming into the occasional conversation while I worked on other things and also profitable with all the good crypto info that was available at one time. Frankly, the fun days on CT are far and few between. I rarely find a decent gem or tidbit of information to research on crypto. I have to wade through in-fighting, arguments, and a ton of politics to find anything useful. I just don't see the point anymore. The negatives currently outweigh any positives I once received.

With that said, I've deleted most of my Tweets. I'm going to keep the account for special occasions like the SBF/FTX debacle. I'll probably post a few Hive headlines when big things happen here from time to time. It's still a good gauge of market sentiment for the most part. Regardless, I'm done checking in daily. At the very least, I may post my Hive links on there when I log in for #HiveChat once a week, and just keep promoting Hive.

Thank you #LeoThreads for creating an alternative and monetizing that alternative with #Hive. I find it funny that we have such a great atmosphere here on Hive where we have close to zero censorship and people are able to speak freely. Yet a site like Twitter that has censorship policies in place has some of the most horrifying content available on a mainstream social platform. I'm going to return to covid/election fraud. It's obvious at this point it's being done intentionally and I'll no longer participate.

FUCK YOU TWITTER

Sort:

oh yea! take this tweet and shuv it! who need em..

i say good for u.. just replace twitte with leo and u are golden. :)

That's the plan. Threads has been a lot of fun so far.

Seems like a good move to me, but we may have slightly different reasons for leaving. I hardly use it now after having been there many years. I didn't see too much weird shit there unless a friend shared it and I didn't pay too much attention to the trending tags. The big platforms do seem to amplify extreme views and I don't know if that is intentional or not. I was put off by Musk taking over as the guy is just a troll who likes to stir up controversy. I don't feel that the boss of a social platform should do that if they want it to be for everyone.

I have been using Mastodon, which feels a bit more like the old school internet, but there is a strong anti-crypto sentiment with some people there. Hive is where I feel comfortable even though there's plenty of shit I don't want to see. I can generally avoid it. It will be interesting to see how it scales. If there were 100x as many people active it could change the vibe. The dapps may need to adapt to give us more control over what we see.

Interesting times.

I've had a few people suggest Mastadon. I'm pretty happy here at Hive. I've thought that as well about the number of users and how user growth could affect the whole "vibe" here.

IDK, I can't help but think there's something more nefarious going on with traditional social media.

I think it's just the times we're living in though. I've seen smaller platforms get ruined with all the negativity to. Hopefully we keep our awesome vibe here. @steevc

Not sure why, I keep.screwimg up my replies. Not sure if this replied to your message or my post so I tagged you.

For me it's a lot about the people on a platform. There are some cool ones on Mastodon, but none of these things are essential.

The big companies are out to make money. I'm sure they do some deals with governments, but they have to in order to operate in those countries. Obviously Hive is a bit different, but hardly anyone knows about it.

I've never liked Twitter to be honest. I only recently had to load it onto my own personal phone due to an instruction from work and that in itself grated me because I don't like the platform at all. I too had some hope for it when it was bought by Musk, but I think that similar to the Steem debacle, if something can be bought, it can be abused - that's unfortunately the case for most social media and for the news outlets as well.

If your life improved when you ditched it, well that's your answer. I left normal social media a long while back and I've never been happier with my decision so I totally agree with your sentiment.

I only recently had to load it onto my own personal phone due to an instruction from work and that in itself grated me because I don't like the platform at all.

It's getting harder and harder to get away from these platforms too for this very reason. I've heard a lot of people talk about the need for it at work. Also, many sites that have logins are starting to utilize social media platforms to handle their credentials.

I also refuse a Facebook account and I've found a couple of sites that only allow Facebook logins. So it's getting harder and harder to not participate in these platforms.

If your life improved when you ditched it, well that's your answer.

For me, this was the deciding factor. The world is stressful enough without volunteering for products that make our lives even more stressful. This may not be everyone's experience with social media, but for me, I feel better without it.
