I am quite cynical when it comes to politics, though. Perhaps instead of trying to persuade people that government works, it's better to frame it as society working in spite of government and insurgents alike. Despite the trappings of democracy, is it really different in kind from US or Spanish colonial rule? Maybe the separatists and insurgents don't think so, at least. [/arrogant foreigner commentary]
