Today I want to talk about the local brew. Every tribe in kenya has a local brew. We 42+ tribes just to mention a few, kikuyu has karatina, Digo has mnazi, taita has mlolo and us luhya has busaa and changaa.. i will concentrate on luhya local brew. Chang’aa refers to distilled spirits and busaa is a fermented beer.
Our fore fathers used local materials and it was sweet, but nowadays chemicals are used to make the brews, thus the kenyan government has banned all the local brews thus making them illegal. Reasons being they lead to killing, not measured, leads to infertility , the youth becomes addictive and it leads to school drop out, crime, early marriages and pregnancies.
Because of poor living and small salaries here the police are forced to comply with the deals to move around on motorbikes on Mon, Wed and Fridays to collect what is commonly knon as "rent" where the sellers have to part with 100 and 200 shillings for the days failure to which leads to arrest so the does pay the rent, now everybody for himself when arrested and judged fines and prison term is tough.
The local love the brews because they are easily available, cheap. Everybody even the poor can afford . The government wants to end this at all costs but it is not easy, using fines and prison term high to discourage people to deal in brews but its had coz most people are dependent on the brews, and for 90 percent its there daily bread.
Thus I advise the government to find an alternative business and fund them to eradicate this, by arresting won't solve. God help Kenya
