Guess What The Best Performing Currency Of The Last 50 Years Is?

in #leofinancelast year

This is meant to be fiat currencies only. Otherwise BTC would win by a landslide. And the award for the best performing currency of the last 50 years goes to...... the Swiss Franc (CHF).

Tradingview has launched a new feature allowing you to see yearly data. This allows you to go really far back... to the 1970s even. So I was curious how the different major currencies have performed over long periods of time and one currency stood out.

USDCHF

First, up, we have the USD against the CHF. Starting from a high of 4.2 back in 1972, it has slowly and steadily declined to a current rate of about 0.86. That's an 80% drop in value of the USD.

NZDCHF

But it's not just the USD. The New Zealand dollar also saw a massive decline, albeit not as massive as the USD. From a high of 1.5 in 1979, it is now trading at around 0.53. So that's about a 67% drop in the value of the NZD against the CHF.

CADCHF

Let's see how the CHF does against a resource currency like the Canadian dollar. Again, it dropped from 1.5 in 1982 to the current low of 0.65. A 57% drop.

CHFJPY

Last but not least, let's look at how the CHF performed against another safe-haven currency, the JPY. Starting from a low of 78 in 1972, it now trades at 163, which is about a 50% increase in value of the CHF. So this isn't simply down to the CHF being a safe-haven currency.

If you want to park your money in a Fiat currency that will maintain its value over the long term, the Swiss Franc might be worth looking at if past 50 years of data is anything to go by.

Not investment advice, just something interesting I noted.
