It has been a nightmare travel weekend for some.
There were millions of Americans who were expected to travel this July 4 holiday weekend and for many it unfortunately meant being stranded in airports with nowhere to go after their flights were cancelled or delayed.
Apparently a computer glitch added to the mess that resulted in a number of flights being dropped.
There have been hundreds of flights, some 1,100 or more that have been cancelled recently and thousands more have been delayed as well.
Bad Weather and staffing shortages
Two issues that are adding to the mess of things are said to be staffing issues and bad weather.
But we have known forever that this was and always is going to be a busy travel weekend.
Airlines have been busy trying to keep up with the demand and they have been aggressively hiring in an effort to try to fill those spots and boost their pilot pools.
Pilot Shortage
Some airlines, such as American Airlines, have had to stop serving flights to certain areas because of the shortage of pilots that they are dealing with right now.
In another effort to increase interest for those who might want to start a new career there are some airlines who have also already sought to boots their pay to make the position more attractive to those who might be interested in joining the industry. A number of companies have been engaged in a recent hiring spree to make up those shortages.
The shortage of pilots is one thing that some aviation experts have suggested is a key risk for operators these days.
