Island living is great way to live. I know from experience having spent many years living in the Caribbean. There are beautiful beaches everywhere, great opportunities to both fish and dive. The only real downfall is that since most goods are imported it can be a little expensive. I used to island hop on the weekends quite a bit, and one of those trips I found myself in Curacao. It's a beautiful island nation just to the east of Aruba off of the coast of Venezuela. There you can find incredible scuba diving, white sand beaches, and a very friendly local population.
Curacao has a long history of being conquered by multiple nations. The Spanish were the first enslaving the majority of the native population and sending them to work on the island of Hispaniola. Then the Dutch came onto the scene and that was followed later by the British. Even Venezuela invaded in the early 1900's. It finally settled as a a Dutch territory eventually becoming an independent nation as a representative democracy within a constitutional monarchy, where they self govern but the Dutch are responsible for their defense.
The island itself is a beautiful place. If you ever get a chance it's a great place to visit. The scuba diving is amazing with extremely clear water for most of the year. While I was there I picked up a silver coin as a souvenir, I liked the design on the reverse more than anything. Take a look:

When I bought this coin I had absolutely no idea that it was made in Denver, Colorado of all places. It was interesting to find out that they used the Denver Mint. I suppose the reason for this is it was minted during World War II, so it may have been difficult to produce any coinage in Europe because of the war. I really like the look of this coin, it was circulated quite a bit before someone picked it for their collection. Lots of history of purses and pockets before then, always makes me wonder what it spent on. It's a great souvenir from a very fun trip!
