Painful things about my Country

in #life2 years ago

I love my India very much and whenever I am out of my Country a part of my heart is still left back home. But there are few things that I do not like about my Country and I find it very painful watching it. That's Poverty. It is sad to see so many people living on roads and slums. In Oman we do have a single beggar seen on the streets or nor even a slum area is found in any corner of the Country. There is prosperity and beauty all around. Whereas when you land in India, even before you land you see a few slums area from the aircraft itself. The views are such contrast of both the Countries. While Oman when you land you see the beauty of the Arabian Sea, the Majestic Mountains, the Gold course and it looks like a paradise. Living in Oman is like living in a wonderland. Reality hits me when I travel to India.

Poverty is a a major concern in India. We see more poverty in the urban areas than in the rural. For the same reason that people from villages travel to cities in the hope of getting work and then they settle down on roads when they have no roof over their heads. I remember when I was working in Mumbai and would travel to work by the local train, the scenes were bad. Outside the Railway station you will see full families settled down on road with all their belongings spread out on the walking paths. The funnier part is that there is a police station also on the same road, but none of the police will ever make them leave from there.

From a rural area, if anyone thinks of moving to a city, the first city that comes to their mind is Mumbai city, because first of all it is a very glamorous city where the Bollywood Movie industry is also based. People think that they will find some or the other job in this city. It is also called the City of Dreams and the City that never sleeps. When they land into the city, reality hits them. It is an expensive place to live, it is not so easy to get a job and accommodation is sky rocketing. They end up living on roads and begging. With all of this the crime rate is also up as some of these people in the frustration end up with robberies and illegal activities.

The reason is not that they are kind to them, but they get money from them like a bribe to stay there, and that is why they are allowed to be there. In the recent times some clean-up has been happening as a lot of people have started taking objection. You will see that in most of the posh areas these people spread them out on the roads, because they assume that there will be good earning in that area either by begging or selling all this road side stuff. If you visit Mumbai city, you will see that it is a complete contrast on one side you will see very tall rise buildings posh localities and on the other side you will see extreme poverty and huge slum areas.

Dharavi is the biggest slum area of Mumbai and it has become so famous that it is now also one of the tourist attractions, especially after the movie Slumdog Millionaire. This is the irony of my Mumbai city, for some it is a bed of roses and for some it is a bed of thorns.

It's the story of the whole of India, not just Mumbai. More Indians are getting poorer and jobless each day.

Sorry to hear how bad the situation is in India but I think many countries would end up like this when compared to Oman or some other countries that only got rich because of the oil from the Persian Gulf region. I think in places like the Emirates, they were just lucky that the oil was there. Otherwise, they might have struggled just like India... Just my two cents though ;)
