El pasado 4 de febrero de 2022 se cumplieron 45 años de la publicación de Rumours, uno de los álbumes más vendidos de la historia discográfica mundial. El álbum fue producido por Ken Caillat y Richard Dashut y los miembros de la banda: el baterista Mick Fleetwood, la tecladista Christine McVie, el bajista John McVie, el guitarrista Lindsey Buckingham y la vocalista Stevie Nicks. La grabación del álbum se completó en un año, tiempo en el que los miembros de la banda estuvieron “internados” en los estudios de Record Plant en Sausalito, California.
February 4, 2022 marked the 45th anniversary of the release of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album, one of the best-selling albums in world recording history. The album was produced by Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut and the band members: drummer Mick Fleetwood, keyboardist Christine McVie, bassist John McVie, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks. The recording of the album was completed in one year, time during which the band members "secluded" at Record Plant's studios in Sausalito, California.

Given the fragmented interpersonal relationships between the band members, the recording of this album was like a ticking time bomb. Nicks and Buckingham had just separated after a six-year romantic and artistic relationship. Fleetwood's wife ditched him and started a relationship with his best friend; Christine and John had split up after an eight-year marriage, and they did not speak to each other. However, these guys' talent and emotional strength of the band was bigger than all the tensions, anger, confrontations and turmoils they had to face during that time. The result?, an impeccable album, full of honest songs and exquisite instrumentation that has stood the test of time.

At the time of its release, Rumours was the fastest-selling album, with more than 10 million copies sold during its first month of release. The album had four Top 10 singles in the U.S. (with "Dreams" at No. 1) and stayed at No. 1 for 31 weeks on Billboard's albums chart. In addition, Rumours was awarded the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. By 2021, the band is estimated to have sold 40 million copies worldwide.

Second Hand News
Este disco tiene el sello creativo de todos los miembros de la banda; pero es, sin duda, Lindsey Buckingham quien lleva la batuta en la producción musical del mismo. Buckingham re-orienta la forma de tocar de John McVie y Fleetwood hacia sonidos y ritmos más pop y rock. El disco comienza precisamente con una canción escrita por él: Second Hand News. Canción inspirada en las mujeres con las que Buckingham estuvo tras romper con Stevie.
Rumours has the creative imprint of all the members of the band; but it is, without a doubt, Lindsey Buckingham who leads the musical production of this album. Buckingham re-orients the band's sound towards more pop and rock rhythms. Precisely, the album begins with a song written by him: Second Hand News, a song inspired by the women Buckingham was with after breaking up with Stevie.
Caillat en su libro Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album comenta que muchas de las letras de Lindsey provocaban discusiones con Stevie en medio de las grabaciones del disco. En cuanto a los arreglos musicales de la pieza, Buckingham incorpora elementos del ritmo de "Jive Talkin'" de los Bee Gees y los mezcla con el sonidos celtas y el rasgueo de su guitarra y la exquisita percusión de Fleetwood. Además, el propio Callait cuenta que Buckingham no estaba satisfecho con el sonido del bajo de John Mcvie para esta canción, y aprovechando que éste estaba de vacaciones, montó él mismo la pista del bajo.
In his book, Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album, Caillat comments that many of Lindsey's lyrics sparked fights with Stevie. As for the musical arrangements of the song, Buckingham incorporates elements of the Bee Gees' "Jive Talkin" song, blending them with the Celtic sounds and strumming of Buckingham's guitar. In the same way, Fleetwood's percussion is exquisite. In addition, Callait himself recounts that Buckingham was not satisfied with the sound of John Mcvie's bass for this song, and taking advantage of the fact that Mcvie was on vacation, he put together the bass track himself.
2.- Dreams
Escrita por Nicks en uno de esos tantos momentos en el que la banda no necesitaba su participación en la grabación del disco. Nicks se retiraba a una habitación apartada del estudio en donde había un piano. Allí, escribió la canción en unos pocos minutos, escribió esta balada, la grabó en un casete y volvió al estudio donde le exigió a sus compañeras de la banda que la escuchara. "Dreams" se convirtío en el único éxito número 1 de Fleetwood Mac.
Dream was written by Nicks in one of those many moments when the band didn't need her participation in the recording of the album. Nicks would retreat to a secluded room in the studio where there was a piano. There, she wrote this ballad in a few minutes, recorded it on a cassette and returned to the studio where she demanded that her band mates listen to it. "Dreams" became Fleetwood Mac's only number 1 hit.
3.- Never Going Back Again
Una de mis canciones favoritas del álbum. En esta pieza acústica, Buckingham exhibe sus habilidades con la guitarra, así como su voz. La canción habla de un breve romance que tuvo con una mujer tras su ruptura con Nicks.
One of my favorite songs on the album. In this acoustic piece, Buckingham showcases his guitar skills as well as his vocals. The song talks about a brief affair he had with a woman after his breakup with Nicks.
4.-Don't Stop
Canción escrita por Christine McVie, la cual alcanzó el Top 5 de éxitos. Un himno al optimismo que invita a seguir adelante y a no mirar atrás una vez terminada una relación. Christine McVie dice que dedicó esta canción a John McVie del que se acababa de separar. Cuenta Caillat que cuando la pieza fue interpretada por primera vez por Mc Vie, a él no le gustó. No sonaba bien y era el sonido de la batería en la intro era muy lento. Ni a la misma Christine le gustaba, por lo que le pidió a Lindsey hacer un dueto. Esta incorporación mejoró la considerablemente la composición a la pieza.
A song written by Christine McVie, which reached the Top 5 hits. A hymn to optimism that encourages people to move forward and not to look back once a relationship is over. Christine McVie says that she dedicated this song to John McVie from whom she had just separated. Caillat says that when the piece was first performed by McVie, he didn't like it. It didn't sound good and the sound of the drums in the intro was too slow. Christine herself didn't like it either, so she asked Lindsey to duet with her. This addition considerably improved the composition of the piece.
5.-Go Your Own Way
Mi segunda canción favorita del disco.Go Your Own Way fue escrita por Lindsey Buckingham y la misma versa (una vez más) sobre la separación con Nicks; Otra canción en el que uno de los integrantes de la relación le dice al otro que ya puede marcharse y que ya no le importa. Esta canción, a diferencia de Second Hand News tiene un ritmo y rockero. En ella , se puede apreciar una magistral interpretación de la guitarra eléctrica por parte de Buckingham. Es el tema más rockero de Rumours y el primer sencillo en alcanzar el número 10 en el Billboard Hot 100.
My second favorite song on the album. Go Your Own Way was written by Lindsey Buckingham. It is about his breakup with Nicks; In this song, he tells her , she can leave because he does not care anymore. This song, unlike Second Hand News has a more rocker rhythm. In it, you can appreciate a masterful interpretation of the electric guitar by Buckingham. It is the heaviest rock track on Rumours and the first single to reach number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
6.-Songbird
Otra de mis canciones favoritas del album es Songbird, escrita por la pluma directa y racional, pero conmovedora de Christine Mc Vie. En ella, nos habla de amor verdadero e incondicional y nos cautiva con su sensual voz ronca de contralto. Cuenta Caillat que cuando Mc Vie interpretó al piano esta pieza por primera vez, él quedó impactado. Así, sugirió al grupo hacer la grabación de la misma en fuera del estudio, en un auditorio que alquilarían para la ocasión . Así, la pieza fue grabada en el auditorio Zellerbach de la Universidad de California. Allí, en un escenario especialmente preparado para el momento con champán y rosas incluidos. Cuentan los miembros que muchos lloraron al escuchar esta interpretación . Yo debo confesar que yo me pongo muy sentimental cuando la escucho, ya que me encanta. Con esta canción se termina la primera parte del álbum original.
Another of my favorite songs on the album is Songbird, written by the direct and rational, yet moving pen of Christine Mc Vie. In it, she speaks of true and unconditional love and captivates us with her sensual husky contralto voice. Caillat says that when Mc Vie played this piece on the piano for the first time, he was impressed. So, he suggested to the group to record it outside the studio, in an auditorium that they would rent for the occasion. Thus, the piece was recorded at the Zellerbach Auditorium of the University of California. There, on a stage specially prepared for the moment with champagne and roses included. The members say that many cried when they heard this interpretation. I must confess that I get very sentimental when I hear it, because I love it. With this song the first part of the original album ends.
