Tuesday Music Mix

in #music3 years ago

Good morning fellow Hivians ... I trust you have stopped by for your daily music mix. Three tracks today , all from circa half a century ago.

We start with Three Dog Night with their hit from 1969 ..

The official commentary included in the CD set Celebrate: The Three Dog Night Story, 1965–1975 states that vocalist Danny Hutton's girlfriend, actress June Fairchild (best known as the "Ajax Lady" from the Cheech and Chong movie Up In Smoke) suggested the name after reading a magazine article about Aboriginal Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night".

Three Dog Night - Joy To the World

Moving swiftly along ... this act performed from the early to late 1960's but I am sure that even if you are younger than me (that is probably 95% of Hivians) you will have heard this tune somewhere and at sometime in your life. Great vocals from Cassandra 'cas' Elliot..

The Mamas & the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California which recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968. The group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960s. The group was composed of Americans John Phillips, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips and Canadian Denny Doherty. Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group, who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early 1960s.

The Mamas & the Papas released five studio albums and 17 singles over four years, six of which made the Billboard top 10, and have sold close to 40 million records worldwide.[3] The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for its contributions to the music industry.

Mama's and the Papa's - California Dreaming

The last for today is from a band which had a prolific songwriter in Justin Hayward and were instrumental in incorporating rock into storytelling and / or ballads.

The Moody Blues first came to prominence playing rhythm and blues music, but their second album, Days of Future Passed, which was released in 1967, was a fusion of rock with classical music and established them as pioneers in the development of art rock and progressive rock. It has been described as a "landmark" and "one of the first successful concept albums". They became known internationally with singles including "Go Now", "Nights in White Satin", "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Question". They have been awarded 18 platinum and gold discs. Their album sales total 70 million.

There were some people playing Dungeons and Dragons and the entire session was a Moody Blues reference and one of the players figured it out and ragequit XD

I know the Moody Blues well .... know NOTHING about Dungeons and Dragons though.
