Vintage Photos - eBay Set #1 (1-4)

in #photography2 years ago

See the previous post in this series here.

I made some impulse buys after getting a new scanner and picked up a huge batch of slides a while back. These pictures span from as early as the late 1940s to as late as the early 1990s. These were from Goodwill and eBay (sometimes via estate sales). There are many thousands of these slides. I will be scanning some from time to time and posting them here for posterity.

This set starts a brand new series of slides. I don't have as much to go on as to the ultimate origin of these compared to the previous set. They came to me from eBay and most likely were picked up at an estate sale by the seller. Most of them seem to be taken in the 1960s and same individuals are included in most of the photos. It looks like there are some that were taken in Miami and some that were taken in New Jersey and perhaps elsewhere. I get the impression that Miami was a vacation spot for this family.

The first photo in this set was processed in April 1969 and the others were processed in November 1968. The first is some kind of party or other event involving food and lots of people. The next three show a family camping or perhaps just cooking out and roasting marshmallows by the fire. I think these last three may have been taken in Miami. At first I thought they were dressed a bit warm for any time of year in Miami but looking at the November 1969 weather for Miami, it looks like there were a number of rainy and cool days with temperatures as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit which is definitely cool enough to be wearing some warmer clothes.

So interesting.

Its weird that there could be pictures of me out there that I don't even know exist and they could be randomly living in a blockchain ...

I just wrote a whole sci-fi story and it relates to the belief that when you take a picture of someone, you steal a little bit of their soul. Now there are ghosts in the blockhain. hahahahah

thanks for your post. I had fun musing.

I know that's a belief among some Native American tribes, that taking a photograph steals your soul. Did you ever read 'The Sun Dog' by Stephen King? It's a novella that was included in the 'Four Past Midnight' collection. It basically tells a story that is kind of the inverse of that belief I guess...sort of.

What amazes me is that stuff like this gets thrown out, donated to thrift shots, or gotten rid of at estate sales so commonly. You would think that younger people in the family would want to keep stuff like this. But maybe they just don't have the knowledge of the format or the willingness to deal with it. Meanwhile, I'll keep digging through them until I find that elusive photo of the Loch Ness Monster or proof that aliens exist.

So I knew it was a Native American thing, but, I didn't know which tribe so I edited my comment. I read that as a kid and it really did stick with me.

I have never read that story but I am curious about it now, problem is that Stephen King writes some LOOOOOOOOOONG books.....

It amazes me too but then I realize that these pictures and such come from homes of deceased with no family left, storage units where the people couldn't pay the stuff anymore, evictions, and other hardships, makes the pictures that much more precious.

I doubt its people just carelessly tossing the stuff, unless, its that cousin who cleaned out grandma's house and was mad cause she wasn't in any of the pictures, but then you would think they would burn them instead.

lol, here I am musing over old pictures again.
