Once upon a time I was driving towards a football match and I've noticed a hand written board about a "Scarecrow Festival. I've made a mental note and then google it at home. This is when I've learned about the small civil parish in North Northamptonshire called Lowick, and their annual event!
The village of Lowick appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Luhwik, a name that derives from Old English "Luhha's or Luffa's dwelling place". Do not confused it with another Lowick from Northumberland! One of those day journeys that didn't required me to use Travala to book it!
Iron ore was obtained in three places close to the village, and then taken to the Islip Ironworks site. However... Lowick is now known for their annual scarecrow festival where you can vote for your favourite! This was interesting, and I add it on the calendar!
I drove there on the day, with some snacks in the bag, and ready to walk around the village. The weather was surprisingly good, with sun and no clouds after a full week of heavy rain. I parked and started exploring by foot, and Cruella De Vill was scarecrow number one. I was told there were about 35 of them around the village... and the challenge was accepted!
Also, I was told there will be art and crafts in the church, refreshments in the village hall, pony rides and plenty of ice cream! The village of Lowick was prepared for the crowds, and the streets were packed with people that were looking forward to some giggles.
I laughed so hard at some of the scarecrows, and truly appreciated the effort put into such marvelous creations. Rapunzel was at the window, Bob the Builder was chilling in a wheelbarrow, and dudes where doing dudes things! Polly has gone to heaven, and the pirate got a ducky as a replacement!
Stopped for a cup of tea and some biscuits, and got some raffle tickets. Not a bad deal at 4 tickets per pound, so I've bought 20 of them. The odds where in my favor, as I won a bottle of wine, a book, a bag of sweets and a pig plushy!
Refilled with energy... I continued the trek! The Dolly Airways flight attendant was a top attraction, same as Fred Flinstone and the German Beer Drinker at the Snoty Fox pub. However, the Harry Potter scarecrow had something... magical!
I finally found the ice-cream! Artisan flavors, waffle cones, free toppings and sprinkles are the right ingredients for a messy treat! The temperature and the plethora of syrups made my pistachio & honeycomb ice-cream melt faster!
Minions and more, a family of scarecrows who love Birra Moretti and even Taylor was there! I'm telling you that this village outdone many top attractions on Tripadvisor. Looking forward to the 2025 edition!
I'll stare directly at the sun, but never in the mirror
It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero
All that walking burned a lot of calories, and the best way to add them back was pizza! Not sure why... but the Lowick mushrooms where spectacularly spooky! Fortunately no hey and straws were added as toppings!
I have this thing where I get older, but just never wiser
Midnights become my afternoons
When my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people
I've ghosted stand there in the room
