We Never Know When (An Original Poem)

in #poetry2 years ago

The unexplainable allure
of the golden hour,
the fragrance
of oak logs
smoldering sweetly
in the campfire,
coffee brewing long
before the sun rises,
a loved one’s
unique laugh or
quirky sense of humor.

Each of these little
idiosyncrasies
enveloping us,
in every moment
that we’ve
become indifferent to
and take, mostly,
for granted,

Someday,
we will experience
every one of these
marvelous things that
make our life experience
uniquely our own
for the very last time,
and we never know when.

Until we
awaken, fully,
to our transitory nature
to the extent
that we hear
reminders of it
constantly whispered
in the wind
we’re not truly alive,
none of us know
what’s around the next bend,
we never know when,
never know when.

Poetry should move us, it should change us, it should glitch our brains, shift our moods to another frequency. Poetry should evoke feelings of melancholy, whimsy, it should remind us what it feels like to be in love, or cause us to think about something in a completely different way. I view poetry, and all art really, as a temporary and fragile bridge between our world and a more pure and refined one. This is a world we could bring into creation if enough of us believed in it. This book is ephemera, destined to end up forgotten, lingering on some dusty shelf or tucked away in a dark attic. Yet the words, they will live on in memory. I hope these words become a part of you, bubble up into your memory when you least expect them to and make you feel a little more alive.

Most of us have experienced a moment of perfect peace at least once in our lives. In these moments we lose ourselves and feel connected to everything. I call these mindful moments. Words can’t describe how complete they make us feel.

These moments are usually fragile, evaporating in seconds. What if there was a way to train your mind to experience more of them? It’s deceptively easy and requires nothing more than a subtle shift in mindset. My new book, Mindful Moments, will teach you to be much more content despite the chaos and imperfect circumstances continuing to unfold around you. This makes me think of fall. I don't really know why. I know that Spring is right around the corner so I probably have my seasons a bit mixed up.

Maybe it's because Autumn is a season for letting go?

Maybe so!

I liked your touching sad poem, with repetitions of the main semantic lines. A penetrating poem!

Thank you!

This is so nice and exciting to learn from because so many things are said to be experienced on a daily basis and this is what keeps us moving as we learn from every part of them.

The unexplainable allure
of the golden hour,
the fragrance
of oak logs
smoldering sweetly
in the campfire,
coffee brewing long
before the sun rises

While reading these lines, I felt myself near a tent and campfire drinking tea :)

Oh, that's a nice kind of escape! There's no better spot on Earth than next to a campfire.

What a beautiful poem

Thank you, Angela!

This is quite an amazing poem worth learning something from. Thank you for sharing this great peice

Thank you for reading!

So much shared in such a little poem! That's why I love art in all its forms - because of its power to share what normal words wouldn't be able to describe. You are very talented!

You're welcome! Thank you for saying that. I really grow to appreciate art more and more the older I get. I believe art, in all its forms, is one of the highest forms of human expression.

This poem got me

Very beautiful poetry of life. You are right, we can never know our fate in the future. Have a nice day, Eric

Thank you Eliana! Enjoy your weekend!

There's nothing as experience or experiencing rhapsodies that tends to tap into the deepest of our very core. This poem speaks Differently, especially because people have their unique stories and experiences.

I try to write my poems so people can draw conclusions from their own lives/experiences.

Poetry is something that awakens a sleeping person from inside. Our national poet Dr. Allama Iqbal through his poetry, he awakened the entire nation and made them realize how valuable they are. Whenever I was taught poetry in school or college, I was not so interested in poetry, but with the passage of time I started to understand the poetry as I listened to the songs, there was poetry in them, I heard the ghazals and they had all of poetry. Poetry is only for those who have taste, there is no poetry for those who have no taste in it.

That is amazing that Dr. Allama Iqbal was able to do this with his writing! Poetry is really like a piece of abstract art, different people take away different things from each poem, that's been my experience anyway. You're right though, you must be open to the pieces before they have an effect on you.

Until we wake Up and break loose from our shells, we might never really discover those peaceful moments designed to give us a sense of fulfilment.

I write poems, so I know a good poem when I see one. Your choice of words was top-notch👌

Thank you for sharing this message ♥️

Thanks for the kind words!

A poem for the ages! How fleeting are these moments, never to be truly experienced again, not in the same way, with the same emotions. Each moment is a tiny capsule of time, unique and independent of all other moments. Your writings always make me think lol

Thanks, Tamara! Time truly is like a fast flowing creek, even when we're standing in the same space it changes from moment to moment.

we will never know when it is the last time...
that's why we have to live everyday
as if it were
the last one.

This poem let me think, beautiful ❤️

This poetry is amazing and truly arouses the inner self. Philosophy and its expression in the form of words, and poetry has great potential at any given time.

Someday,
we will experience
every one of these
marvelous things that
make our life experience
uniquely our own
for the very last time,

Every individual constantly endeavors for this.

Thank you!

How much truth there is in these verses! Sometimes we do not give the true value to things. We feel that things, moments and people are eternal. Your poem made me remember my dead father. Whenever I would go on a trip, he would always say to me, "You bring me something good, daughter". For years, when he came home, I would bring him luxurious and expensive things. And when I would ask him, "And what did you bring me? He would tell me with a smile, "I saved you many kisses". I would say jokingly: "But those kisses are not as expensive as the gift I brought you!!!! Right now I would give anything, half my life, to receive those kisses from my father. "Nobody knows what he has until he loses it. Thank you for giving me reasons for this memory. Certainly: "We never know when". So let's enjoy life and our loved ones. A hug, Eric

Thanks Nancy, I know what you mean. My Father and I shared the same sense of humor. My wife tells me that I never laugh anymore as hard as I did when I talked with my Dad. Middle age seems to be a succession of "lasts". As I was writing this I remembered the last time I said goodbye to my Father. I had come in town for a visit and they dropped me off at the airport. He got out of the car as I was unloading my suitcase. I hugged him, having no idea it would be for the last time. I cherish those memories, we made so many good ones! Have a wonderful weekend!

Are you all right, my friend? I saw news of the bad weather in that area and remembered you. I just saw that you haven't posted for days. I hope you are enjoying your vacation and writing a lot!!! A hug and take care of yourself

Hi Nancy! All is well here. The weather has gotten warmer so we’ve been hiking a lot. I’ll be posting new pictures of those hikes soon. I hope you’re having a good week!

It's a beautiful poem.

Trust your instincts, invest in you, live boldly, and take chances

Taking chances will make you stronger and stronger day by day. It will also bring new opportunities in your life.

Oh, yes! This truly speaks to me, Eric #ericvancewalton. There is no getting around it, so much sandwiched in between these lines. Until we take the time to see those little things in life, or they touch a cord, a familiarity, until then, I think they remain unrelated.

This touches me, this written today. We never know, and the beauty of seeing the little things, and allowing me to cherish them before their time is a gift to me. To be able to appreciate them, but, honestly, can you? Especially when you know you can do it tomorrow? But, then it happens you couldn't, and the opportunity is lost.

So again, I feel like I might have not appreciated quite as much as I should have.

Hi, Eric! Your words are not only beautiful but, they leave me with a sense of peace. Thank you!

Thank you, thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. This must be one reason they say "youth is wasted on the young". Can you imagine how much a middle aged person could extract from life if they could go back to their twenties with the wisdom gained from those decades of living?

Ha! Yes! My grandfather used to say that to my mother, who said it to us and so on... It never makes sense, until one day it does.

Really very great and amazing peom. Man really learns a lot from poetry and when he thinks about it and compares his life with it then he gets a purpose to live life in a new way. I myself read poetry whenever I am getting very worried and then I think about its meaning and then the time passes very well because one learns a lot by reading poetry. Man's biggest mistake is that he believes in people and thinks that this person will help us. This is the biggest mistake. Man should trust himself and work hard. The hard journey of a person's life has to be determined by the person himself, then after that, a person gets success in life.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!

Most welcome dear.
