Thunder and Blunder on Day One

in #politics9 days ago

Well, the Donald surely did hit the ground thundering, and some right good noise it was— starting with the 1500 + pardons of the J6 offenders. That promise-kept was crucial because it was one big presidential middle finger rebuke to the Giant Lie that the Washington establishment and MSM have been egregiously peddling for the last four years.

This article goes into some detail about the statements and executive orders Donald Trump made on day one. The good news is that most items are net positives.

The thing that has probably gotten the most press is the pardon of 1500+ J6 offenders. The fact of the matter is that many of those that were STILL in jail did nothing more than walk through an open door (including an old lady using a walker). These people weren't armed and there was no insurrection. To pretend otherwise is stupidity of the highest order. Why there may be no proof of an illegitimate election, there were reasons to be concerned. It was an election won by about 44,000 votes out of 158 million votes cast (most of which were early or absentee). As this article points out, the most appropriate punishment for those jailed for these YEARS is more on the order of $100 fine for trespassing. Instead, the government spent $2.7 billion in taxpayer money to prosecute thousands of people.

Trump also quit the Paris Accords. Government "solutions" to eliminate CO2 aren't really about saving the planet and arguably have done more harm than good. Then there is Trump's support of meritocracy over DEI. We used to just call this common sense.

There are other positives but there are also a few negatives. DOGE aside, Trump hasn't really said anything about how he is going to address the spiraling debt and deficit. He also seems to be misinformed about the nature of the Panama Canal. Hopefully he will correct these deficiencies.

Sort:

I have a friend who entered the building on January 6, and spent two years in a Federal prison, before being recently pardoned. He was texting with me and I told him to leave immediately his reply was "The police just waved us in."

There were some people who engaged in violence, the vast majority did not. Proper security that would have preempted the few from tarnishing the peacefulness of the many.

This issue is going to be divisive till the end of American history.
