Meta Okays Calls for Violence Against Russians

in #politics3 years ago

Meta has recently suggested that they would make room for calls for violence against Russians and Russian soldiers on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

It's reported that a memo had been sent to employees of the social platforms that had informed them of these updates to the policy for hate speech.

These platforms have traditionally taken the stance that any and all calls to violence and crime etc are unacceptable but things seem to be in a gray area now with Russia and Ukraine, if they are going to make allowances for some of that sort of detestable behavior.

What could possibly go wrong?

Constitutional lawyer and journalist, Glenn Greenwald, who previously worked on the revelations surrounding the widespread NSA spying activities, recently commented on the change to the policy, noting the comfort that comes with knowing that people like Zuckeberg and Google execs are going to determine when an individual can allegedly advocate violence against certain people on their platforms.

This is surely the sign of a healthy and democratic society, no?

A number of videos and posts related to the situation are increasingly being scrutinized and removed. Anyone who doesn't immediately fall in-line with the MSM rhetoric is being labelled a Russian troll or agent.

And hey, it isn't like the MSM has mislead anyone before on international conflicts, so you can't imagine why anyone might want to think for themselves on this one would you?

There are some journalists who have alleged to have had their tweets removed after posting about alleged support for Nazism that has supposedly been seen in Ukraine.

There are also videos detailing past political conflicts and uprisings in the region that have also been removed from YouTube.

"the role of journalists still should be critically scrutinizing US Govt claims" - Greenwald

"No matter your views on the war, there is a massive escalation in state and corporate censorship regimes in the West justified in the name of this war. How does that not deeply disturb those claiming they're fighting for freedom and democracy?" - Greenwald

In recent weeks Greenwald has increasingly tried to warn the people it seems, about the relationship between national security bureaucracy and big tech and what that could mean as far as censorship on conflicts like this. And now it seems Russia has also opened a criminal investigation against Meta over them making that change to their hate speech policy.

It is a shameful move that Meta could engage in, to enable any individual or organization to call for violence against another individual, any animals, property etc, or to a country no matter who it is. Those who sink that low only demonstrate that they don't value decency and peace if they are willing to adjust their tolerance to violence for some.

Sort:

In three months or less, anti-vaxxers and Russians will be conflated by the authoritarian left into one monolithic enemy group. Might as well throw anti-war people in, too.
