Exploring submarines in Portsmouth

in #portsmouthlast year

As we are in Portsmouth fairly often we bought a season ticket for the Navy museum. On previous visits we explored the Tudor warship Mary Rose and the steam warship HMS Warrior. We were back at the weekend and this time we took their water bus across the harbour to Gosport where the submarine museum is located.

HMS Alliance

You cannot miss it as there is a large submarine up on the dockside. This is HMS Alliance that was launched just after World War 2 and was active into the 1970s.

Control room

I am not sure I have been in a submarine before. As you would expect there is not a lot of space. They have added large doors at each end, so we did not need to climb through hatches. We boarded in the bow where some of the torpedoes were stored. An ex-submariner told us about his experiences. They would go on a ten week tour with no showers, so it would smell a bit. Every bit of space is used for storage, bunks and equipment. Above is the control room lit up for action. We could look through the periscopes.

Engine room

We passed the few tiny toilets and wash rooms, the galley and wardrooms. At the back is the engine room with two huge diesel engines and electric motors. I think the batteries for running underwater are below the floor. Apparently they did not just select the short sailors for these vessels. I could stand up, but the bunks are small and the doorways not tall.

Mini sub

There is a small museum with various relics including a miniature submarine that was used to sneak into harbours to lay explosives under enemy ships in the war. That only had room for four and they would not even be able to stand up properly.

Polaris

This is part of a Polaris nuclear missile that was our deterrent during the cold war. It seems British submarines liked to fly the skull and crossbones flag so they have a collection of those.

Lightship

The museum is in one of the large marinas at Gosport with an old lightship just outside.

Yachts

There are some very expensive looking boats there.

Portsmouth view

We caught the boat by HMS Warrior with the Spinnaker Tower nearby. We may go up that some time. You can abseil down it, but I am not sure I want to.

Bon voyage!

Looks a pretty cool day out!

I can remember seeing HMS Victory down in Portsmouth many, many years ago. A submarine would be really interesting, but I think I'd end up getting all claustrophobic down there. How on earth a group of people can spend 2 months literally like sardines in a can is beyond me lol

The sailors life definitely isn't for me!

There's a lot to see and you can opt to pay for just some of the ships as a full ticket is not cheap. We went on the Victory a few years back. The new Mary Rose museum is really good.

My dad was in the Merchant Navy and went around the world a few times. It does not appeal to me either.

You’ve got me looking at the website for the museum season tickets. We used to have one but it lapsed just before Covid. I think I’ve been on a submarine back in the days of the navy shows they used to put on every year. It must have been the eighties when you could watch harriers taking off and doing displays etc etc.

I’ve not been to the Gosport museum yet though and that’s right up my street!

You could spend all day at the various parts of the museum plus you may get to watch some active Navy vessels too. It's an impressive place.

Been there done that about 15 years ago and brings back some good memories. They had the James Bond exhibition at the time down there and ended up doing the water tour including the submarine.

It will have changed since then. When we first went the Mary Rose was still being hosed down, but now had a fancy new museum.

!BEER

Yes I am sure plenty has changed since then as you are right the Mary Rose was being treated with a continuous spray back then.

wow!! I always dreamed of seeing a submarine. Thanks for sharing these photos, they made me dream for a while

Glad to see you are enjoying your day. It is very nice to visit such places and one is very happy as we see here you see many rare things. Pakistan also has many such museums and similar things are kept there.

Now that's a cool boat! I like that they cut the ends so you didn't have to use the hatches. That's a really smart idea.

I think a lot of people would struggle with the ladders. One lady was only in there a few minutes and said she had to leave as she didn't feel well. It's not for the claustrophobic.

I was in one when I was a little kid, but spaces seemed much bigger then!

It is quite incredible going around submarines, although I haven't been around the Alliance. I have added to my list. A few years ago I went around the USS Growler which is probably somewhat similar to the Alliance.

I hadn't realised all that was down by Portsmouth. Thanks for sharing!

The Navy is a big thing down there. The main museum is surrounded by their docks and there are armed police on patrol.

We used to sing "We all live in a bubblegum machine" on the playground. Those things don't actually seem a whole lot bigger than that.

LOL! There was a recreation of the Yellow one in the Beatles museum in Liverpool. That had more space. No windows in this one.

I never had been there in a submarine but it's look classic and that nuclear missile seems good too.

I've never been to this kind of place and I don't think we have it in my country...
It looks beautiful

Pretty interesting, I would love to go on this tour. Poor lads, it's strange that they didn't have any showers installed on them, never knew that.

Wow, abseiling would be pretty cool, but I don't think it would be my thing, I get a bit wobbly with heights.

There just isn't room for showers and they would need to save water. I think the nuclear subs are a lot bigger, so they will have better facilities. It must have been really tough in the early subs and it was a really dangerous career. If anything goes wrong then you don't have much chance.

Would love to see the submarine museum - never been to Portsmouth before. I was once on one in the US, and old one from WW2 - it was blooming tiny, must have been very brave to serve on those.
There are actually the wreck of two world war 2 mini subs on a beach near Edinburgh - they were used for target practice after the war ! We went to see them last year - quite amazing !

Ooh, that's cool. That may be like the little one in the museum. We are often in Edinburgh, so will have to look out for them.
