The Devil You Know

Finish Line

Udeh and Ukah got very angry that they went after Onochie to beat him up. They beat him to a pulp. He wondered what via offense could be to have been beaten so much. At first, it looked like they were only jealous of the progress he had made in his cassava farm in recent times. He was beaten up black that the whole community knew about it.

The case of the ambush was reported to the chief in charge of the administration of the community.

He summoned Udeh and Ukah to find out what the offense of Onochie was to have received such a beating. When the two men arrived at the palace, Onochie was already there seating on the floor like a common criminal.

Chief Anumanu cleared his throat, then asked Udeh and Ukah to tell the chief-in-council what transpired before they beat up Onochie.

Ukah, being the most outspoken among the two men said:

May you live long our chief. Once was beaten because he impregnated our sister out of wedlock.

Onochie raised his hands to defend himself but was asked to keep quiet else be beaten again.

When the two young men were asked the whereabouts of the pregnant lady in question to be able to ascertain from the horse's mouth who it was that got her pregnant, the men answered in the negative. Agbeke the pregnant lady has absconded for fear of being dealt with by her elder brothers.

Since the victim was not on the ground, the case was adjourned till Agbeke would be available.

That evening, Onochie's wife told him not to ever claim to be a disciplined man because of the accusation laid against him.
Since no one was ready to listen to his side of the story. He was made fun of him for impregnating a girl that is old enough to be his daughter. Onochie got so disappointed in his wife because she could not believe that he knew anything about it.

Even you? You think I would stoop so low to engage another woman, let alone a girl that ought to be protected?

Six months later, Agbeke appeared from the blue. She is quite heavily pregnant. But now, she came not by herself alone. A prince from the riverine community was with her. It was the prince that got her pregnant. Straight, they went to the chief's palace who ordered an immediate meeting with Onochie and the men who beat him up in attendance.

When they say their sister, radiating in beauty unlike she used to be in the past, and the company of a prince, they were shocked to the marrow.

Agbeke was the one that spoke and said that it was the prince that is responsible for her pregnancy.

All others who had doubted Onochie, with those who had spoken ill of him before began to hum like bees in praise of the innocence of Onochie.

As punishment, Udeh and Ukah were fined for community service for one moon and to pay up all that Onochie spent during his recuperating period.

*What does certified plagiarism-free mean?

As a result of our plagiarism review, we are confident that this post represents original unpublished creative work.

We are backing that confidence with a 150% curation-reward guarantee.

If you vote for this post and it is found to have been plagiarized (prior to the close of the voting period), we will coordinate efforts to zero out all presumed author rewards. However, that also zeros out all curator rewards. To protect our curators, we will fully reimburse any would-be curation rewards that were zeroed as a result of the plagiarism enforcement, and we will add 50% to it.

This guarantee applies to any curation rewards that would have been worth at least $1 at the time the payout would have occurred.
