Generally, life is beautiful when there is some good money involved. Being able to afford a decent life, go wherever you want, explore and absorb the beauty of life etc. But something that is equally lovely is being able to show up for your friends when they need you or when you need to. Life is hard enough but thank God we are capable of so much kindness and we get to show and feel that through our relationships.
When it comes to money conversations amongst friends, I think flexibility in giving works best when both or more parties are equally generous or have free giving spirits. Nobody wants a one-sided situation where they are left feeling like they do too much or isn't deserving of reciprocity.
When it comes to friendship, there shouldn't be any holding back. It doesn't matter whether they ask or not because some people are not comfortable with asking for help, but when you perceive that a friend might be in need, it only makes sense to do everything in our power to help them.
Also, some may disagree with this but, I don't think it makes sense to ask friends for some really minor refunds. For instance, you pay for their lunch or taxi fare for whatever reason. Asking them to pay back for such things just doesn't make sense to me, especially considering that they would do the same for you. This is why like-minded people belong with each other.
