VideoGames & Computer Entertainment (August 1990)

Cover of the August 1990 issue of VideoGames & Computer Entertainment

Features

  • Michael Jackson's Moonwalker: A Video-Game Thriller - Moonwalker was originally an arcade game starring Michael Jackson. It was an isometric scrolling beat-em up that was somewhat based on the Smooth Criminal video and featured Michael Jackson against Mr. Big and his minions. Apparently, Mr. Big had kidnapped children that help give Michael Jackson is energy. Kind of disturbing in retrospect. There were also versions released for the Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, and various computers.

  • Medallions and Magic: A Player's Guide to Neutopia, Part I - Part 1 of a detailed guide to Neutopia, an RPG for the TurboGrafx-16.
  • Electronic Arts Takes On The Video-Game Market - A brief history and look at the future of Electronic Arts. Up to this point they had mostly been known for their computer games. However, they were starting to make serious inroads in the video game market with games like Skate or Die 2, Budokhan, Populous, Zany Golf, and others.

  • Battling the Behemoth: A Player's Guide to Shadowgate - A guide that will take you through the entire game. Nice if you are stuck but you had to be careful how you use it or it completely ruined the game.

That video of Michael was a sensation at the time, and I still enjoy watching it today.
The effect of the coin that Michael was tossing into the music machine was great.
At the time that this effect of the coin was made, it attracted a lot of attention, without camera cuts, the way in which they achieved it, was explained by those responsible for the special effects, in a television program.

It's been a long time since I've seen that video. For some reason, I remember most of his other videos better. I need to go back and watch it again.

I think I still have this issue. I have most of the VG&CE run, used to have almost all the Gamefan and EGM issues but had to let those go for financial reasons years ago.

The guy that did The Game Doctor in these mags, Bill Kunkel (RIP), would later become a friend of mine. He gave me a piece of advice that set me on a new career in writing and media relations.

Once a great read for me, now it is hard to look at this particular series of mags without a tear in my eye.

I have a pretty close to complete set of VG&CE too. I have lots of EGM but nowhere near a complete set. I probably have a GameFan or two around but that wasn't really one I bought back in the day. I have way too many magazines and should probably thin my collection a bit. Maybe I'll get rid of all those issues of Game Informer I have lying around...
